Description	:	July 7, 1921 ~ Frank Walker was seriously injured Tuesday in a runaway smashup on Lake Street. He had been hauling lumber from the D. and M. depot to the state park site and was returning to the depot with his empty wagon. Read More	July 7, 1921 ~ Frank Walker was seriously injured Tuesday in a runaway smashup on Lake Street. He had been hauling lumber from the D. and M. depot to the state park site and was returning to the depot with his empty wagon. He was sitting on the reach and when the team became frightened at an auto and started to run, he had but little chance to hold them. They started at the foot of Main street and ran north on Lake to Church street, a distance of two blocks. They were going at a terrific pace and in spite or all of Frank's efforts to hold them straight up Lake street they swung and attempted to turn at the Church street corner. At this corner they crashed into an electric light pole a foot through. The impact was so great that the heavy pole was broken in two and the earth around its base was loosened so that there were several inches of play between the hole and the pole. Frank had shoved back on the reach and braced his feet against the hounds. When the crash came, he was thrown violently forward and caught on the king bolt which projected three or four inches above the reach, and a terrible wound was torn in his body. Dr. Miller dressed the injury, which required 22 stitches to close. After the crash the horses were thrown across the side and into the tall grass of the vacant lot there. While they were not badly hurt, the marks on the grass indicate they both fell flat 12 and 16 feet from the pole. Pieces of the harness were scattered about but the wagon was damaged only to the extent of a broken tongue and reach. This was Frank's second run away with the same team within a week. In the first another wagon and harness were badly broken up, but no injury was done to either the driver or the horses. Information obtained from the Alcona County Review, July 7, 1921.
