On that day Thornton got his license another man, a friend, obtained one also. The years passed. Thornton settled on a farm near Altoona. He grew prosperous and reared a family of boys-all grown men now. His friend had chosen the other route —the primrose way it has been called. While Thonton was "busting clods" on his homestead John was leading a more or less Bohemian existence along the path illuminated by the white lights. Wine, women and song were his chief diversions. They were his life in fact for a dozen years. A few months ago Thornton was placed at the head of the county farm committee. Under him are numerous functionaries including the manager of the farm. He had complete charge of the farm. Tuesday afternoon he drove out to the farm on an inspection tour. He walked through the halls and corridors of the great building in which the insane are housed; he passed through the pauper wards and out over the fields and meadows, "sizing things up." Suddenly he saw a man old looking and hombly deformed from disease which had gnawed at him for years apparently, bobbling a long a bypath leading to one of (the) barns. The poor cratures (sp) hands were almost useless; his face was emanciated and distorted. I I saw after a moments close scrutiny who it was mused Thornton. The Altoona Herald, Altoona, IA March 30, 1933 Thorntons Have Golden Wedding Supervisor and Mrs. Frank G. Thornton celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at their home here Saturday. It was a very quiet affair, a number of friends and relatives called during the afternoon and evening, and a picnic supper of the family and relatives was enjoyed in the evening, some seventy-five relatives from Altoona, Des Moines, Ankeny and Valley Junction were present and enjoyed the evening together. Mr. and Mrs. Thornton were married on March 25th, 1883 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Harless in East Des Moines, the Rev. Buckston of the U. B. church officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Thornton went to housekeeping on the John Stewart farm southwest of Ivy and in the year 1886 they moved to the farm south of Altoona, later moving into Altoona and in 1915 they built the fine new home in Altoona where they have since resided. Mr. Thornton had charge of the county road work for several years until 1915 when he became a member of the Board of Supervisors as a representative of the 4th district, to which position he has been returned each election by his district since that time. Mr. and Mrs. Thornton raised a family of six children and death has entered but once, when a son Roy was taken several years ago. The children are; Harley, of Ankeny; Sam of Ogilvie, Minnesota; Charles, of Des Moines; Mrs. H.D. Davenport of Fargo, N.D., and Ted at home, who were present for the occasion except Sam who was here a few days before the occasion but could not remain for that day. Franklin Thornton's obituary was published in the Des Moines Tribune, Page 1, Column 1, February 10, 1944.
