"BUD" MYERS passed away peacefully, with family at his side, on January 10, 2013 at Emeritus at Carlsbad in Carlsbad, California where he had moved in October of 2012 to be near family. Bud was born in Fortuna on January 1, 1921 and had celebrated his 92nd birthday on New Year's Day with a small family party. "BUD" MYERS passed away peacefully, with family at his side, on January 10, 2013 at Emeritus at Carlsbad in Carlsbad, California where he had moved in October of 2012 to be near family. Bud was born in Fortuna on January 1, 1921 and had celebrated his 92nd birthday on New Year's Day with a small family party. His parents were Albert Franklin Myers and Vaida Athol Noble Myers, descendents of the Myers, Crabtree, Noble and Kelsey families, early settlers of the Fortuna, Rohnerville and Hydesville areas. Bud attended Fortuna schools, graduating from Fortuna High School in 1938 where he excelled in basketball, baseball and track, and played in the high school band which participated in the opening ceremonies of the new Golden Gate Bridge. He went on to attend Humboldt State College for one year, while working at the White Grocery and Safeway stores and playing in local dance bands. In 1941 he and the love of his life, Jean Hindley of Ferndale, eloped to Reno, Nevada and that marriage lasted nearly 65 years until her death in 2005. Bud's working life began in the grocery business in his youth in Fortuna. Due to weak lungs he was unable to enter the military during WWII so spent six years working with his father-in-law on the Hindley Ranch in Honeydew. In 1948 he returned to the grocery business at Valley Grocery in Loleta until 1951 when he became the grounds maintenance person at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds. In 1958 he and his wife bought a grocery store in Ferndale and they operated Myers Grocery until 1969. His last working years were as a driver and delivery person for Made Rite Meats from which he retired in 1982. Bud was very community oriented and was involved in many areas: a 50 year member and past master of Ferndale Masonic Lodge and a 50 year member of Ferndale chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He was a past president of the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Ferndale Rotary Club, a commissioner for the Ferndale Fire District and a member for many years of the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a charter member of the Eel River Trap and Gun Club. During his retirement he enjoyed spending time with family, golfing, traveling to all fifty of the United States, woodworking and especially gardening at the cabin in Honeydew that he and Jean had built. They enjoyed watching their grandchildren's activities especially the sporting events at Ferndale High where they were selected as Boosters of the Year for Ferndale High School in 1994. Bud was pre-deceased by his wife, Jean, his parents Albert and Vaida Myers, his sister Nadine Lufkin, his son-in-law Lt. Clarence A. Sousa, U.S.N., his father-in-law and mother-in-law Dr. Joseph and Cecil Hindley, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Elton Stirling, Sewell Lufkin, Tim Meadows, Cecil Jo and Dolly Hindley, Harlan Hindley and Elaine Hindley. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Mike Moreland of Carlsbad, CA; daughter and son-in-law Lorie and Rick Petersen of Eagle Point, OR; and son and daughter-in-law Wayne and Cindy Myers of Pleasanton, CA. Also surviving are grandchildren: Mark & Anna Sousa of Carlsbad, CA; Pennie Petersen George and Andrew of Oak Harbor, WA; Lorie Sousa Chapa and Ernie of Carlsbad, CA; Coby Petersen of Eureka; Mick and Marie Moreland of San Clemente, CA; Sam and Nicole Myers of Livermore, CA; Jessica Myers and Ben Myers of Pleasanton, CA. There are five great-grandchildren: Blake and Kevin Chapa, Brett and Tyler Sousa all of Carlsbad and Mackenzie Myers of Livermore. Beverly Stirling, of St. Helena, Bud's sister, also survives him as does a brother-in-law, George Hindley, of Ferndale, as well as many nieces and nephews.
