Rieman, which occured last Friday morning removes one of Altoona's earliest and widely known citizens. He has been in poor health the past year or more. Mr. Rieman came to Altoona years ago and has been connected with the growth and business of the town in various ways. He was a man honest to the most extreme even to his own loss and always "on the square." He was honored by all and will be greatly missed. His death occured just six years to the day following the passing away of his wife. Franklin Reiman was born in Germantown, Wayne Co., Indianan, June 16th, 1840 where he resided until 1857 at which time he moved to Green Castle, Jasper County, Iowa with his parents. He with his two brothers, Jacob and Clay enlisted in the spring of 1861 and served three years in the Civil War. His father and mother died while he was in the service. He was married to Christina Backer Byerly, March 5th, 1865 with whom he spent fifty happy years, she having died December 9th, 1915. In the spring of 1869 Mr. and Mrs. Reiman's parents together with Mr. and Mrs R. Baker moved to Polk County and engaged in the mercantile business in the town of Altoona, which place, with the exception of several temporary moves has always been considered their home. The year of 1874 was spent in Colorado and the year 1887 and 1888 in California. He united with the Altoona Christian church in November 1883. Mr. Reiman belonged to Co. B. 13th Iowa Regiment. He was a member of Crockers Iowa Brigade. He leaves one brother Clay, of Mankato, Kansas; one step son, W. H. Byerly, of Collins, Iowa; two sons and one daughter; John M. Reiman, of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. J. W. Rider, of Des Moines, Ia., and Charles J. Reiman, of Altoona, Ia also ten grand children and four great grandchildren. He was Commander of Dorr Post G. A. R. of ALtoona of which only four members are living being Mr. Bishard of Des Moines, Ia., Mr. Williams of Lake Williams, North Dakota and Mr. Walters and Mr. Gifford in Altoona. Not enough for the Grand Army Burial Service. He was intensely patriotic. Was a very quiet man, not much for demonstration and show, always honorable and upright. The funeral service was held from the Christian church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by the pastor Dr. Fredrick D. Kershner, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Altoona cemetery.
