Mr. Tenney awoke yesterday morning after a refreshing night's sleep and seemed in excellent health and spirits. At about 11 o'clock he experienced a slight nervous chill, which soon affected so seriously that his grandson, Dr. Frank T. Chamberlain, was summoned. The doctor recognized at once the dangerous condition of his grandfather, but every effort to rally the strength of the aged man failed, and he gradually grew weaker, and passed away surrounded by all of the members of his family, who reside within reach of messengers. Col. Tenney was a life long and famous hotel proprietor. He first entered business in this city in 1857 as the proprietor of the National, which then rested under a cloud of despair, since its doors had been closed for a period of ten months, during the excitement connected with the famous poisoning episode of the year previous. Success crowned his efforts, and the National, under his able management, soon became the most prominent hotel of the city. He was born in Hudson, N.J., on the 17th day of January, 1808, and was at the time of his death in his eighty-ninth year. He was the son of Dr. Paul Tenney, a physician of Hudson, who attained a great notoriety in his day. Col. Tenney received as a boy a common school education, and early began his struggle with the world as an employe of the old City Hotel of Hudson, of which he eventually became proprietor. At this time he married Miss Mehitable Varnum, a member of a family which has left an indelible print on local New England annals. She was the niece of Brigadier General James M. Varnum of Revolutionary fame, who served on Washington's staff and whose picture adorns the historical collection at Mount Vernon, as well as the walls of Independence Hall, at Philadelphia, and of the Hon. Joseph Bradley Varnum, a famous statesman, who for twenty-two years represented his State in the House of Representatives, and during four of them occupied the Speaker's chair. Their married life was most happy. Of the two children born to them the first, now deceased, became the wife of Commissioner John W. Ross of this city, and the second was Mrs. Georgette A. Chamberlain, who has been for a number of years the constant companion of her father. Col. Tenney's proprietorship of the National continued from 1857, with a break of eight years between 1861 and 1869, until he retired from business life in 1892. Many famous men were housed at the National during this lengthy period. He made many friends, among them Henry Clay, who died while a guest of Col Tenney; Alexander Stephens, who made this his home until elected governor of Georgia, and who later became the vice president of the Confederacy; Justices Davis, Clifford, Nelson and Miller, and Hon. John J. Crittendon, ex-governor of Kentucky, who made the National his home during his term as United States Senator. Since his retirement Mr. Tenney has made Washington his home, living during the winter months at the National and through the summer at the Varnum, which he named after his wife's family, intending to manage it himself. Mr. Tenney was throughout his life an ardent Democrat, and after attaining his majority never failed to return to his native State to cast his vote at all Presidential elections until the last, when failing strength and disgust with the new Democracy kept him from the polls. His annual visits to his old home, and that of his wife, however, were events of deepest interest to him, and he took unending delight in the fact that the to old mansions of the Varnums in Lowell, Mass., were still in the possession of the family. His last trip was made in October, 1895, and within a few hours of his death he talked with happy anticipations of the trips of another year. Mr. Tenney had seemed unusually well during the past week. Besides his daughter, Mrs. Georgette A. Chamberlain, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive him. The grandchildren are Dr. Frank T. Chamberlain, Mr. Tenny Ross, Miss Mildred Ross, Lee Ross, and Georgette Ross, the two sons and two daughters of the Commissioner, and the great-grandchildren are the children of Dr. Chamberlain and Mr. Tenny Ross. After a brief service at the hotel Wednesday morning conducted by Dr. Sunderland, of the First Presbyterian Church, the remains will be conveyed to Manchester N.H., and be buried in the family vault.
