Description	:	Frantisek Bis was born 15 January 1826, and died 14 November 1887 according to this headstone. He, his wife Anna, his three year old daughter, also named Anna, and infant son, Franz, left Bohemia and traveled to Bremen, Germany where they boarded the "Olympia" headed for New York. The ship log reads that they were bound for Iowa, and they arrived in New York on June 30, 1857. In August, "Franz Bys" bought NWSE 1/4 12-81-7 in Johnson County, Iowa from Jno. He, his wife Anna, his three year old daughter, also named Anna, and infant son, Franz, left Bohemia and traveled to Bremen, Germany where they boarded the "Olympia" headed for New York. The ship log reads that they were bound for Iowa, and they arrived in New York on June 30, 1857. In August, "Franz Bys" bought NWSE 1/4 12-81-7 in Johnson County, Iowa from Jno. Kreiger, and thus began his life as a farmer in Iowa. The family story is that there was a Czech accent mark over the "i" in Bis that made it look like a "y", and that is how the spelling of the name changed. Sadly the infant, Franz, did not survive to adulthood, and it is believed that some more children born to Anna and Frantisek were also buried on the farm in Iowa, but there are no records of their comings and goings. However, Frantisek and Anna did successfully raise four children to adulthood, three daughters and one son. When their eldest daughter, Anna, was 18, she was sent to do housework in Cedar Rapids so that she might learn English to help her father sell his produce.
