DIED AT ULYSSES ON MAY 1. Funeral Services on May 3 for David City Resident. Funeral services for Frank Shonka, resident of David City for the past 22 years, who died Tuesday, May 1, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kobza, at Ulysses, after illness of four days, were held at 9:30 o'clock Thursday morning, May 3, at St. Mary's Catholic church in Dwight, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Father Bauer. Requiem mass was sung by the Dwight church choir. The pallbearers, grandsons of Mr. Shonka, were Sylvester Shonka, Joe Novacek, Valerian Kobza, Valerian Shonka, Ernest Shonka and Joe Shonka. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery at David City. Coming from away to attend the funeral were Sylvester Shonka of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mrs. Louis Trojan of Ogallala. Mr. Shonka was born in Czecho-Slovakia July 4, 1844, and when two years of age came with his parents to the United States. They lived in Texas 14 years and then moved back to Czecho-Slovakia, where they lived two years. They then returned to America to make their home, living in Iowa and later in Nebraska and Butler county. In 1871 Mr. Shonka was married to Miss Anna Tupy at Plasi, east of Bruno. To them were born nine children, all of whom survive, namely, Mrs. Mary Novacek, Jerry Shonka, Frank Shonka, Joseph Shonka, Edd Shonka, Anton Shonka, Sylvester Shonka, Mrs. Joseph Kobza and Mrs. Lewis Trojan. Mr. and Mrs. Shonka retired from farm life in 1912 and moved to David City, where Mrs. Shonka died April 27, 1920. Besides his children, Mr. Shonka leaves one sister, Mrs. John Bartunek of Abie, 35 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was a kindly pleasant man and had made many friends during his lifetime.
