About 1868 many Bohemians or Czechs (as they were called after World War I) came to America. Most of them came to the Blue River [Wisconsin] area to settle. They started two churches about 1870. Later in 1870 the two churches merged and took on the name of Bohemian Evangelical Church. In 1881 many of these members migrated to the wilderness of the Dakota Territory and settled mostly in what later became the Townships of Eagle, Richland, Highland and Pleasant Grove. At first they had religious services in private homes and later in a schoolhouse. Frank Matousek Sr., was chosen to be the leader and meetings were held in the Bendon school near the Frank Pipal home. About 1883 Frank Pipal, in Richland Township donated two acres of land to establish a cemetery, and later the church was to be built on that spot. For some reason the church was not built there and the cemetery was closed, but not abandoned, in 1900. Frank Matousek Sr. was chosen to instruct the young people in preparation for confirmation. The class was graduated in 1888 and Rev. Balour from Tyndall. S. Dak., received the class into Christian fellowship in the Zemlicka school (later called Marsh school). The following were in that first class: Clara Matousek, Anna Junek, Frank Junek, Amelia Junek, Josephine Junek, Frank Zemlicka, Frank Novak (brother of Matt), Frank Wasicek, Frank Zika, John Duba and Frnk Forman (brother of Joe).
