In 1845, Franz Reif and family came to Iowa, and was offered what later called Dutchtown or Hibernia (in Burlington) for $800 dollars, but they refused, as they thought it was too level. They preferred Timberland, and settled in Benton Township, Burlington, Iowa. In 1850, the family moved to Franklin Township. They bought a farm three miles Southwest of Dodgeville, Iowa and lived there until he died. Family records tell that Franz and wife had 16 children, of which only 10 lived to adulthood. Franz and wife Christina Reif, were early members of The First German Methodist Episcopal Church, that was first organized on January 8, 1848.
