Bullinger One of the Pioneer Settlers of This County Passes Peacefully Away Last Thursday evening, January 5th, our community was cast into mourning on account of the death of one of our most respected citizens, Mr. Francis Xavier Bullinger. He had been ailing for a number of years and at times seemed to rally so that his many friends hoped that he would soon gain in strength again, but he took a weak spell the first of the week from which he never recovered. Mr. Bullinger was born in the province of Bavaria, Germany, on December 3, 1833. He was a bright lad in his youthful days and at the age of eighteen years had mastered the German, French and Latin languages and graduated from the gymnasium at Heidelberg. In 1854, he left his native land to seek his fortune in America. He first stopped at Milwaukee, where he entered St. Francis college. At the end of two years, he accepted a position in the post office there and afterwards engaged in the profession of teaching school, which vocation he successfully followed for many years in Wisconsin and Iowa. In 1859, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Bockenstedt, who died last May. Soon after they were married, he entered into the mercantile business in Dyersville, which he followed for a large number of years. He was a highly esteemed citizen and his many friends often rewarded his ability and gentlemanly disposition with offices of honor and trust. He was a thorough christian and a devoted Catholic, a kind husband and father. He leaves to mourn his loss four children, John and Joseph, Lydia and Anna, and also two adopted children, Mary and Xavier, who have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. The funeral took place last Monday morning and was largely attended. The St. Francis and Schaetzen societies, of whom he was a member, attended in a body. After requiem mass at St. Francis church, his earthly remains were laid to rest in St. Francis cemetery, the Rev. Father H.H. Forkenbrock performing the last sad rite. May he rest in peace. Bullinger. THE CHILDREN _________________________________ F.X. BULLINGER, school teacher, Dyersville; born Dec. 3, 1834, in Bavaria; in 1854, came to Wisconsin; in 1858, to Dubuque Co; the following year he came to Dyersville, where he since has resided and taught school; he owns his house and lot in Dyersville. Married Miss Mary Boeckenstedtte in 1859; she was born in Oldenberg, Germany; they have four children- John, Joseph, Liddy and Anna. Democrat; Catholic Church.
