The bare mention was made last week of the death of Fred A. Fuchs but none of the particulars were at hand then. He had gone to Astoria, Oregon the summer for his health, taking his wife and two of the children and for a time he seemed to improve. About three weeks ago he was taken much worse on his father, C. G. Fuchs hurried to his bedside and was there when he passed away, August 27. This in itself would seem to be enough for a loving wife and doting father to stand, but just a short time before Fred died, Arlene, his youngest child not yet a year old was injured and the doctors declared that she had but a short time for this world. And yet this was not enough for the afflicted ones. If they waited until the little one was called hence, which good doctors said was a matter of a short time, the threatened railroad strike might make it impossible to ever get the remains of their beloved ones home among relatives and close friends. Mr. Fuchs says the people of Astoria were very kind and considerate and helped them in every way possible although they were strangers in a strange land. Weighing all the circumstances and condition, it was decided to attempt the journey home. A state room was chartered on a transcontinental train for the wife and children and the return trip begun. At first the sick child seemed to improve but as the higher altitudes were reached it begin to fall and passed away about fifty miles before reaching the continental divide. At Laramie, Wyoming, Mr. Fuchs left the train to have the body of the little one embalmed. While Mrs. Fred Fuchs and the remaining child continued with the remains of her husband. They came by the way of Ames and got here Sunday morning. Charles Fuchs as soon as the body of the child was embalmed at Laramie, took the first train with the remains and got here Sunday evening by the way of Alton. The Masonic fraternity took charge of the remains and kept them until the funeral, which was held from the Christian Church at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon Rev. Spears preaching the sermon. The two bodies were buried in one casket, the little one resting in the arms of the father. Burial was made by the Masons, using their beautiful burial service, J. W. Morgan acting as Master. It is of no use to try to express in words the sympathy felt for the doubly bereaved and heart-broken wife and mother or the stricken parents and family. It is not often that one is called upon to drink so deeply from the cup of sorrow but such misfortunes bind us all closer together. Fred Albert Fuchs, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Fuchs was born near Perry in 1888 and at the time of his death had not yet reached his 28th birthday. At an early age he moved to Palo Alto County, just north of Laurens, where he grew to manhood. In 1912, he was married to Miss Olive Kemp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rall Kemp and to this union were born, three children, Lloyd, Glenn and Arlene. He is survived by the wife, still but a girl, and two sons. The little daughter lingered in this world about a week after her father had passed over. Besides the above he leaves a father, mother, five brothers and four sisters and many other relatives and a host of friends. In 1913 he moved to Minnesota, near Breckenridge, where he expected to make his future home. His health failed however and he was forced to seek a higher and drier climate. He spent several months in a tuberculosis sanitarium near Denver, Colorado and afterwards went to the Woodman sanitarium near Colorado Springs where he was much benefited. Knowing that it was unsafe for him to remain in this climate, he went to Astoria, Oregon with his family a few months ago. Fred was a dutiful son, a kind father and a loving husband. He was a congenial friend. As a man he ever walked uprightly and was clean in his habits and conversation. To know him was to confide in his life.
