Injuries received last Wednesday, April 17, were fatal to Fred Chipman, whose death occurred in a Watertown hospital at 11 o'clock Monday morning. Chipman had left Miller on the morning of April 17, on a vacation trip to visit with his brother, Lloyd, at Bertha, Minn. He had taken his fishing gear and dog with him, planning to do some hunting and fishing while away. He was driving on Highway 81, ten miles north of Watertown on which construction work was underway. Just ahead of him was a truck loaded with dirt, and the two vehicles collided. Chipman received a crushed chest and compound fracture of the leg, and was immediately rushed to a hospital. For a time it appeared that he might be showing some slight improvement, but complications developed, and death followed Monday forenoon. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, April 25 at 3 o'clock at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller, and will be conducted by Rev. Tyra Talley and Rev. Douglas Barrows. Interment will be made in the family plot at Sunbeam Cemetery, Holden Township. Casket bearers will be Lee Crossman, Bob Welch, Byron Meehan, John Peterson, Bob Robertson and Raymond Caffee. Born in Carroll, Iowa August 5, 1900, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ammi Chipman, he had come to South Dakota at the age of seven. The family lived for a short time at Iroquois before moving to a farm in Holden township, which became the family home. He farmed there until the fall of 1965 when he retired and he and his wife moved to Miller. While here, he was employed part time at the implement business owned by his son Dwight and grandson. Mrs. Chipman's death took place February 5 of this year. During the many years he resided on the farm, he was very active in many community affairs. He served many years as a trustee of the Congregational Church, and was a member of St. Lawrence Lodge, A.F. & A.M. Survivors include his two sons, Dwight and Darrell; three brothers, Boyd, Onida. Floyd, Bertha, Minn., and Jake, Lewistown, Mont.; one sister, Mrs. Neal Verdugt, Eagle Bend, Minn.; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His parents and one sister preceded him in death. Almost at the same time that word was received concerning Mr. Chipman's death, Mrs. Dwight Chipman received word that her brother, Paul Olson, had been killed in an accident at Willmar, Minn. Olson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Olson of Burdette township, was repairing an elevator in Willmar, when he fell. Although the distance he fell was reported to have been only about 10 feet, he struck his head on a concrete strip, and died soon afterward. He had also received a broken arm and shoulder in addition to the head injury.
