Description	:	Fred Clarence Olson was born to Oscar and Antoinette “Tonnie” Olson on January 21, 1920 in Vega, SD on the family farm. He was the middle of the five surviving children and the oldest son. Fred loved the farm, its open spaces and the animals. He attended the Olson School, a brick structure, provided by his grandfather for the area. After graduating from grade eight, he went to high school in Chamberlain. Read More	Fred Clarence Olson was born to Oscar and Antoinette “Tonnie” Olson on January 21, 1920 in Vega, SD on the family farm. He was the middle of the five surviving children and the oldest son. Fred loved the farm, its open spaces and the animals. He attended the Olson School, a brick structure, provided by his grandfather for the area. After graduating from grade eight, he went to high school in Chamberlain. He lived with his Aunt Ida and apprenticed with Mr. Bates, as a printer at the Chamberlain Register. Fred entered into military service during WWII. He entered at Omaha, NE and was sent to the San Diego United States Naval Hospital Corps School. He was trained to be a Pharmacist Mate. He served on a number of ships and was in Pearl Harbor, Corona, San Bruno, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz, California. In his travels in the Navy, he sailed as far as New Caledonia, near Australia. After almost three years of service in 1945, Fred was given an honorable medical discharge because of a stress related heart condition. He was a Pharmacist Mate Third Class at the time of his discharge. Fred returned home and two weeks later married Beulah Brinker, a neighbor, in Omaha, NE with his younger brother, Henry and his wife Esther as witnesses. Fred and Beulah had their first home in a suburb of Los Angeles, CA. Fred worked in printing there, working for a company that produced directories. When they returned to SD, they lived in Rapid City where Fred attended the National School of Business and received a diploma in Business Administration and Office machines. After graduation, Mr. Bates invited Fred to return to Chamberlain to work with him at the newspaper.
