The following was from Ralph Joel Tompkins; Fred, the "Deputy Maverick" scores again: Several years ago I had taken a group of drama students from the Leto High School here in Tampa to Orange Springs. My purpose was to film in 16 mm scenes about the old hotel there, the old meeting house and to try to find the gravesite of Charles Dickison, son of the Confederate Captain who saved Florida's interior from the Federal forces during the heartbreaking Civil War years. I stopped by a house to make inquiry, and was greeted by a Mr. Johnson. Introducing myself as Tompkins, I saw Johnson's eyes light. "You ain't related to Fred Tompkins, by any chance, are your?" Upon being assured that I was, he pointed to a small empty field across the road. And the he told me the following. A large farmhouse had stood on the sopt to which he had pointed Johnson himself was a young man...possibly 20. On this particular evening an old time social was in progress, with candy pullin', spin-the-bottle and all the other innocent diversions which assuaged the bitterness of the depression years. The air was electric with laughter and gaiety. Occasionally a young couple would steal down the Citra road to share a kiss or two. But eve the tranquility of Eden had its disrupting serpent! This lovely evening was to be no exception. Just when everything and everybody was euphoric with happiness and the magic of the moment, a big bruiser of a man, a "rude man of the baser sort" as the apostle Paul would call him...crashed the party. Nobody wanted trouble with him, Johnson told me, but he was hell bent for trouble with somebody, anybody. Suddenly, a slightly built, slightly humped man slipped out of the darkness and eased up behind the unwelcome, uninbited goliath. Just as suddenly the back of the behemoth arched backward. In that back was a loaded 38 muzzle held in the hands of one Marion County Deputy, or Marshall, whatever...Fred Tompkins. With a few words of backwoods vernacular Fred explained what he wanted the intruder to do and with what expedition he wished it to be performed. And it was so! May God bless the memory of Cousin Fred Tompkins, I have in my possession a live 38 bullet taken from the site of Fred's old homeplace in Citra. Both Fred and Annie were characterized as "Uncle Ben and Old Her", in "When The Whippowill", a novel by their friend, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlins.
