Read More	AKRON PIONEER IS CALLED BY DEATH LAST WEDNESDAY Rites Are Held Here Friday Afternoon For Fred E. Waterbury Fred E. Waterbury, a widely known and esteemed resident of Akron, passed away Wednesday morning, November 9, 1955, at the home of his son in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hummel, in this city, at the advanced age of 87 years, 7 months and 19 days. Fred Eugene Waterbury was born March 21, 1868, on the old homestead northwest of Akron, in Union County, S. D., where his parents were among, the earliest pioneers. He was the last of the nine children of Henry and Jane Waterbury and had lived in the Akron vicinity nearly all his life. In his early childhood he was baptized in the Christian faith. On November 20, 1901, he was united in marriage with Mabel Chandler, of Akron. They at once made their home on a farm northwest of Akron, later moving into town, where he owned and operated a general store with his brother, Frank. In 1905 they moved to a claim in Gregory county, S. D., returning in 1906, when he purchased a farm south of Akron, which remained their home for 21 years, then moving back to Akron and caring for his aged mother and engaging in the insurance business. In 1933 they moved to a farm southwest of Akron, where he was engaged in farming with his son-in-law, Clarence Hummel. Since the death of his wife, in 1941, he has made his home with his children, and all were at his bedside when the final summons came. Grandpa Waterbury, as he was known to many, was a lover of little children and was never happier than when his children and grandchildren were, gathered around him: He made many children happy with his kindness and generosity; He was a good husband and father, and a-staunch friend, always ready to assist those needing help and encouragement in life. Three daughters, Mrs. Olive Mann, of Winner, S. D.; Mrs. Erma Hummel, of Akron, and Mrs. Letha Booth, of Hawarden; one son, Russell, of Akron; 10 grandchildren and nine, great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends mourn his passing. Funeral services were held Friday, at 2:00 p. m., in Wesley Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Chester L. Guinn, assisted by Rev. Dan J. Peterson, Who paid a fine personal tribute to Mr. Waterbury. Mrs. Esther Ferguson was soloist and Mrs. H. B. Nelson .was pianist. Pallbearers were Harlan and Donny Hummel, Arlo and Vernon Mann and Lanny and Barry Booth, grandsons, of the deceased. Interment was in Riverside cemetery. Relatives and friends w.ho came from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Holechek and daughters and Vernon Mann, of Winner, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Mann, of Omaha Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Hummel and son, of Spirit Lake, la.; Danny Hummel and Lanny Booth, of Des Moines; Mrs. Hazel Manning and Oliver Waterbury, Mr. and Mrs. G. K. Hummel, of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Waterbury, of Norfolk, Nebr.; Dr. C. Waterbury, of Lake City, la.; Mrs. Frances Jahde, of Le Mars; Mrs. Harley Marshall, Mrs. Roy Oden, Mr. and Mrs. A. Horton, Mr. and Mrs. G. Moore, Mrs. Kobe and Mrs. Thompson, all of Hawarden, and Mrs. Ray Robinson, of Washta, Iowa.
