A funeral mass will be held at Holy Name Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2011 with visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union. Burial services will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Garland was born in Whitefish, Montana on April 15, 1913 to Fred Garfield Knight and Melvina Southwick (Hoover) Knight. Garland's family moved to Saskatchewan Canada for a short time before moving to West Union, where he lived for the rest of his life. Garland was the Vice President of Sales for Calmar Manufacturing until his retirement. He was also a masterful woodworker and carpenter. Garland married Julia "Mary" Roach on September 14, 1937 and enjoyed a blessed and happy marriage for over 66 years. Together they raised ten children: Jane (Don) Marshall of West Union, Janet (Paul) Sieverding of Lynnhaven, Florida, Jeanette (Dale) Buenzow of Marion, Judy (Crayton) Ash of Elgin, Janice Underdahl of Solon, Jim (Connie) of Eagan, Minnesota, Jerry (Mary) of Solon, Joanne Frey of West Union, Joe (Judy) of Mount Vernon, and Julie (Dennis) Eckhoff of Humboldt. Garland and Mary had 36 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Garland was preceded in death by: his wife, Mary; his parents; a daughter, Janet; a son, Jerry; three sons-in-law, Don (Jane) Marshall, Dennis (Julie) Eckhoff and Joe (Janet) Peters; a daughter-in-law, Connie (Jim) Knight; one grandchild, Jill Peters; the husband of a granddaughter Scott (Karen Bender) Leonard; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Rose Jaeger (Janet) and Marissa Marshall; and three brothers, Paul, Robert, and John. He is survived by eight of their ten children; a son-in-law, Paul (Janet) Sieverding; a daughter-in-law, Mary (Jerry) Knight; and one sister, Bessie (Jay) Jost of Livermore, CA. Garland was a gifted and talented man and a devoted husband, father, and friend. He shared those gifts not only with his family, but also with his friends and the community. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus for many years. He loved to golf and read and especially enjoyed camping and fishing with his best friend and spouse, Mary.
