McClellan, Jr. was born in Denison, Iowa, July 7, 1930, the son of Fred H. and Janetta Hamilton McClellan, Sr. He was raised in Denison where he graduated from the Denison High School with the class of 1949. Following high school he was employed in construction work with his father and was a member of the National Guard. In 1955 Fred entered the United States Navy from which he retired as Chief Petty Officer in 1979. His military career found him serving in Japan, Okinawa, Guam, Vietnam and several tours of duty in the United States. On April 28, 1964, Fred was united in marriage with Yuriko Morota at the American Embassy in Tokyo, Japan. Fred retired in 1979 and he and Yuriko moved to Denison, Iowa, in 1981 where they enjoyed their retirement years. In his spare time Fred enjoyed camping and fishing. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, Sylvan Lodge #507, A.F. and A.M. and Ninus L. Hunt VFW Post 2504, Denison, Iowa. Fred died Wednesday afternoon, November 25, 2009 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison after suffering an apparent heart attack. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 79 years, 4 months and 18 days. Those preceding him in death include his parents, three sisters, Grace Balderrama, Lorraine Burmeister and Mary Dolores Heisig and sister-in-law, Betty Jean McClellan. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife, Yuriko McClellan of Denison, three sons and their wives, Norio and Kathleen McClellan Morota of Vista, California, Michael and Linda McClellan of Glidden, Iowa and Jerry and Diane McClellan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, five grandchildren, several great grandchildren, one brother, James McClellan of Glendale, Arizona, one sister, Bette Anne Thomsen and husband, Kenneth of Beaverton, Oregon, brother-in-law, Leo Burmeister of Denison, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorial services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 5, 2009, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison with Norio and Kathleen McClellan Morota officiating. Music for the service included a recorded selection of "Wonderful World". Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Inurnment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home, www.pfannebecker.com, in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
