Shellabarger, nationally known poultry fancier and judge and former president of the American Poultry association, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday following a lengthy illness. He was 82 years old. Mr. Shellabarger was born Jan. 2, 1858 at Letts, one of a family of seven children born to Isaac and Charlotte Shellabarger. He engaged in the lumber business with his father at Letts until about 45 years ago when he moved to West Liberty. His marriage to Sarah Powell took place on Nov. 3, 1880 at Alpha, Ill. Taking an early fancy to fine breeds of domestic fowls, Mr. Shellabarger has been active for almost a half-century in this line of work, as a breeder, exhibitor and judge. He judged at fowl shows for 48 years and officiated at three world fairs, at Chicago, St. Louis and Seattle in addition to serving for 30 consecutive years as a judge at the Iowa State fair. He has a collection of a thousand ribbons, medals and trophies which his entries have won. Mr. Shellabarger was both a past president and past secretary of the American Poultry assn. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge for 45 years, and of the Christian church. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Bessie Ross, West Liberty; three grandchildren, Richard and Edward Ross, West Liberty, and Mrs. George Lundeen, Des Moines; and two sisters, Mrs. R. J. Elliott and Mrs. Arthur Lieberknecht, Sr, of Letts. A son, Scott, of Denver, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Snider funeral chapel with the Rev. Frank L. Sutton officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery. Odd Fellows will be in charge of services at the grave, and Rebekans are to attend the funeral in a body. The body is at the Snider Funeral home. ----------------------------------------------------- The Cedar Rapids Gazette, Friday, February 23, 1940 WEST LIBERTY—Fred H. Shellabarger, 82, of West Liberty, nationally known poultry fancier and judge, died at 8 p.m. Thursday after a four-year illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Snider chapel here with the Rev. Frank W. Sutton in charge, assisted by the I.O.O.F. lodge. Survivors are the widow; one daughter, Mrs. Charles Ross, of West Liberty; three grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. R. J. Elliott and Mrs. Arthur Leiberknecht, both of Letts. Mr. Shellabarger became ill in December, 1935, while judging a poultry show at Indianapolis. He began judging poultry in Illinois in 1886 and had judged in practically all of the states and in two or more of the provinces of Canada. As a breeder of Barred Rocks, he had won approximately 1,000 ribbons and many other trophies. His judging record included 30 consecutive years at the Iowa State fair, beginning with 1903. He also judged at three world fairs, in 1893 at Chicago, 1904 at St. Louis, and 1910 at Seattle. For 50 years a member of the American Poultry association, he was a former president and secretary of that organization. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. and Rebekah lodges here 40 years and was a member of the Church of Christ. Born at Letts, a son of Isaac and Charlotte Shellabarger, he had lived in West Liberty more than 40 years.
