Hoffman, a former resident of Adaville and Westfield vicinities, met a tragic death near Missoula, Montana. While the exact circumstances are not known here, e was shot in the cheek by a bullet from a revolver on Wednesday of last week and lived until Friday morning, October 6, 1916. Deceased was born in Plymouth County, Iowa, May 6, 1885, and was a son of Ed Hoffman, now deceased, a pioneer of this county and a former resident of Akron. Fred had been working on a ranch near Missoula. His brothers, Ed, Chas., Frank and Bert are residents of the west part of this county. The remains arrived in Akron Wednesday and the funeral was conducted by Rev. Varce at the U. B. church at Adaville this afternoon. Interment was made there in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The Akron Register Tribune Thursday, October 12, 1916 Akron, Iowa WAS KILLED IN MONTANA FRED HOFFMAN SUCCUMBS TO GUNSHOT WOUNDS Relatives of Fred Hoffman, a former resident of Westfield vicinity, were notified of his death this week by a telegram from Missoula, Montana. The telegram stated he had died from a gunshot wound, but did not give any further particulars. He was a son of the late Ed. Hoffmann, a well known pioneer in the west part of the county and a brother of Ed. Hoffman, of Westfield. The body was expected to arrive from Montana at Westfield yesterday. The relatives yesterday were not in possession of facts to determine whether his death was accidental or otherwise. Fred Hoffman was married but he and his wife had not lived together for some time. LeMars Sentinel October 13, 1916 The body of Fred Hoffman, who was shot in Montana, arrived here Wednesday and was buried in the Adaville cemetery . Thursday. Mr. Hoffman was well known here, having lived here all his life until a few years ago, when he went to Montana. He was the youngest son of the late Ed Hoffman one of the early settlers here.
