Grard, surrounded by loving family members, peacefully ended his earthly journey early on the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, and began his everlasting stay in heaven. He will be dearly missed by family and friends. The son of John A. and Florida (Ash) Grard, Fred was born in Brewer on March 3, 1921. He will be dearly missed by family and friends. The son of John A. and Florida (Ash) Grard, Fred was born in Brewer on March 3, 1921. Just an infant when his mother passed away, Fred moved to Fairfield Center with his father and extended family when he was a young child. On Dec. 29, 1941, Fred joined the Air Force, and then served in World War II. He was decorated with the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal and two Bronze Stars, the American Theater Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. An engine mechanic, Fred served in China, India and Burma. Discharged from the Air Force on Oct. 30, 1945, Fred came home to Fairfield. He married the love of his life, Mary Collins, on Aug. 1, 1946, in Rumford. Fred also began a 43-year career at the former Keyes Fiber in Fairfield. Fred suffered a great loss when Mary died in 1983, and later when his grandson, Frederick P. Giroux, died in a tragic traffic accident at the age of 22. Fred had accompanied his grandson, who was an accomplished musician, on trips to major cities. Fred was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Mary; his brother, Lawrence and his wife, Lorena; his brother, Henry and his wife, Verna; and grandson Frederick. He is survived by daughter Doris Giroux and her husband, Henry, of Vassalboro; daughter Carol of Albion; son John and his wife, Cathy, of Winslow; daughter Roxie Clement and her husband, Randy, of Fairfield; several nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
