Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 31, 1915, he grew up on Staten Island, N.Y., where he graduated from Port Richmond High School; he received his B. S. from the University of New Hampshire in 1938. Read More	EAST PALESTINE - Fred Hoyer Johnson, Sr. passed away on Dec. 5, 2010, at the age of 95. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 31, 1915, he grew up on Staten Island, N.Y., where he graduated from Port Richmond High School; he received his B. S. from the University of New Hampshire in 1938. He had been employed as a draftsman and engineer for various firms, including the Ford Instrument Company, Long Island City, N.Y., the Lombard Corporation, Salem, the L.W. Nash Company, East Palestine, and the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, Youngstown, retiring from there in the late seventies as District Engineer for the home district. He taught Basic Mechanics at Sheet & Tube's Foremen's School for several years, and U.S. Army courses at various locations, including the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan. A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he had served as an ordnance officer and was stationed at the Ravenna Ordnance Plant where he met June Bird of East Palestine, whom he married in 1942. He later served in the European Theatre, receiving various decorations, including a Bronze Star, and was separated from active service in 1945 as a captain. He remained in the Army Reserve, and eventually retired from the Reserves as a full colonel. Fred was a Past Master of Masonic Lodge No. 417, F. & A.M., in East Palestine; served a term as Chairman of the Youngstown Chapter of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, and a term as National Director; served a term as President of the Mahoning Valley Technical Societies Council; was a member of the Tax Board of the City of East Palestine, and a member of the committee that revised its City Charter. He sang for decades in the choir of Centenary U.M. Church in East Palestine and was a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. He was married successively to June Bird, Marilyn Cobbledick and Bernice Atchison Andrus, and was three times a widower. He is survived by his only son, the Rev. Fred Hoyer Johnson, Jr., an Episcopal priest; a stepdaughter, Mary Ellen Andrus Manno of Atlanta, Ga., and by many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders USA, PO Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741. Friends will be received at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home, East Palestine, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Martin, officiating. Burial will follow in Glenview Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the combined units of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4579 and the American Legion Post 31.
