Description	:	Fred L. Howie Sr. was born August 22, 1934 in Dickinson County, Kansas, son of Walter Daniel Howie and Pearl Irma (Hoffman) Howie. He graduated from Hope High School in Hope, Kansas. Howie Sr. was born August 22, 1934 in Dickinson County, Kansas, son of Walter Daniel Howie and Pearl Irma (Hoffman) Howie. He graduated from Hope High School in Hope, Kansas. After school, Fred went to work for Clark Lumber in Herington, Kansas. On April 17, 1957, Fred was united in marriage with Florence May Hird in Herington, Kansas. Soon after the wedding he enlisted in the United States Army. During boot camp he received training in communications, becoming a lineman. After boot camp he transferred to the Army Reserves out of Fort Riley, Kansas, so he could return home to Herington. After the birth of their oldest son, Fred and Florence moved to Hutchinson, Kansas where Fred went to work at the lumber yard. In 1963, they moved to Harper, Kansas where he became the manager of the Town and Country Lumber Yard, later becoming the owner. After closing the lumber yard, Fred went to work at the Danville Co-op for 12 years before retiring. Fred was active in the Harper community. He served on the Harper Fire Department for many years and was a member of the Lions Club and Meadowlark Camping Club, as he loved camping with family and friends. He and Florence were faithful members of the First Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder and sat on the Harper County Parish Council of the church. He served on the school board from 1977-1983, holding the vice president title in 1981 and 1982, and received the distinguished service award for 6 years of outstanding service. Fred was an avid sports fan, attending all of his kids’, grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ sporting events. He had a love for softball and spent over 30 years coaching women's fast pitch and girl's high school softball. He also played men's fast pitch in the position of pitcher. The highlight of his softball coaching career was when he and his son, Jon, coached Nancy’s high school team to a State Title in the summer of 1989. Another love of Fred's was fishing, especially when he could make trips to Lake Texoma with his co-op co-workers, and later with his grandsons who always planned the trip. In June of 2020, Fred moved into the Anthony Community Care Center in Anthony, Kansas. On December 15, 2020, Fred passed away at the age of 86, from complications following a surgery. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Florence on May 9, 2020; grandson, Dusti Jo McCartney; his sister, Shirley Ann Howie, who passed at age 3; and brother, Adrian Daniel Howie, who passed in infancy. Fred will be deeply missed by his children: Fred Howie Jr. and wife, Kay of Little River, Kansas, DeAnna Stevens and husband, Dean of Harper, Valerie Podschun and husband, Rick of Anthony, Shirley Stark and husband, Mike of Harper, Jon Howie and wife, Kelli of Bee Cave, Texas, and Nancy Hacker and husband, Danny of Harper; 25 grandchildren: Nicole (Mike) McQueen, Adrian (Kristen) Howie, Christopher (Kristi) Stevens, Erica (Shane) McGreevy, Brandon Stevens (Danielle Caylor), Adam (Virginia) Podschun, Aaron (Amy) Podschun, Ashley Podschun, Danny Ray (Sarah) McCartney, Scotty McCartney, Kenny McCartney, Vanessa Stark, Arabella Stark, Jesse Kerschen, Jordan (Knut) Brouwer, Amber Kerschen, Jamie (Andrew) Madl, Aspen Howie, Skyler Howie, Harley Hacker, Tamairla (Jason) Spencer, Kayla Popwell, Eric McFarland, Allen Hacker, and Michael Hacker; 39 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Deloris Hird; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
