October 24, 1973 ********** Alton Democrat; December 26, 1896 One of the saddest deaths which we have been called upon to chronicle in this community for some time past, is that of Fred Lieb which occurred in this city, last Tuesday evening. Mr. Lieb was one of our most prosperous and well-to-do farmers, owning a half section of land about two and a half miles east of the city and for the last three weeks had been putting in his time buying up some young stock in this vicinity with which he intended to stock up his farm. While on his way home Tuesday evening he stopped in the city a short time to attend to a little business he had here, after which he in company with several of his neighbors were getting ready to start home, when he suddenly expired. Heart failure was the cause of his death. Mr. Lieb was 45 years of age at the time of his demise. He was born in Baltimore, Md., and came to Iowa with his parents in 1871 when they settled in Dubuque county. He remained there two years and then went to Pocahontas county and took up a homestead where he resided until about ten years ago, when he removed to Sioux county and purchased the homestead east of town. He was united in marriage with Miss Louisa Lechtenberg at New Vienna, Iowa, and ten children were born to bless their union nine of whom are living, the eldest being about 12 years of age. Besides his wife and children he leaves four brothers, Henry and Otto Lieb of this city, W. C. and L. Lieb of Fonda, and one sister, Mrs. L. Fuchs, also residing at Fonda, Iowa, to mourn his loss. Fred Lieb was a good citizen and a good neighbor and his death will be universally mourned. The funeral will be held Saturday from St. Mary's church in this city. Interment in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery. The Democrat extends its sympathy to the sorrowing family and friends.
