Miller Rural Mail Carrier Dies At M'town Fred M. Miller passed away at the Evangelical Deaconess hospital in Marshalltown on January 12 at 2 a.m. due to complications of age. He had been taken to the hospital on December 3rd for treatment. Mr. Miller was born on June 30, 1881 in Alden. He reached the age of 84 years, six months, and twelve days. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. John Miller. In 1901 he was married to Julia Gereke of Wellsburg. She passed away in 1906. To this union two children were born, Mrs. Glen (Frances) Smith, and Fred Miller, Jr. On January 9, 1908, he was united in marriage to Elmda Muller of Ackley. To this union five children were born: Mrs. Helen Simbides, Mrs. Julia Scarr, Heiko H. Miller, Mrs. Mae Murphy, and Warren R. Miller. In January of 1958, Mr. and Mrs. Miller were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with their family and friends. In the year 1901, he became the first rural mail carrier out of the Wellsburg Post Office. He held this position until he retired in 1933. In 1942 they moved to Hampton and for the last 18 years have made their home in Marshalltown. Those who preceded him in death were his parents, his first wife, one daughter, Mrs. Julia Scarr, four brothers, three sisters, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Elmda, three daughters and three sons, Frances, Mrs. Glen Smith of Grinnell; Fred Jr. of New Orleans, La.; Mrs. Helen Simbides of Marshalltown; Heiko H. Miller of Spirit Lake; Mrs. Mae Murphy of Hampton; Warren R. Miller of Grinnell; one sister and two brothers; Mrs. Anna Schoorman of Wellsburg; Herman and Walter Miller of Grapevine, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Reformed church for Fred M. Miller. Rev. Gideon Wolbrink was officiating clergyman. Music was given by a ladies quartet, Mrs. Irwin Abels, Mrs. Douglas Geerdes, Mrs. Harris Peters and Mrs. Herman Stahl accompanied by Marcella Neessen. Flower attendants were Mrs. J. L. Fischer and Mrs. Richard Claassen. Pall bearers were Arthur L. Smith, Melvin Murphy, Ronald Murphy, Gary Miller, Fred Simbides, and Darrell Miller.
