His formal schooling began at age 5 as the only student in the first grade at the one-room Raymond District school near Porterville. Due to the tutelage of his mother, he completed the primer, first, and second readers that year and was promoted to third grade. He graduated Walnut, KS, High School in 1939. Savings from his lawn mowing allowed Morgan to enter Kansas State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University, in the fall of 1939, where he washed dishes in the college cafeteria, worked in the college chemistry stockroom, and delivered The Pittsburg Morning Sun newspaper. One summer, he worked at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. His natural inclination for organization helped him earn a bachelor's degree in chemistry at KSTC. In January of 1943, Morgan began his 40 year career with Phillips Petroleum Company, primarily in research and development, while accruing 12 patents in petroleum- and fiber-related processes and living in four states and two European countries. He was a life member of American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. During 1943, Morgan lived at the Clubb Hotel in Kaw City, OK., while working in nearby Burbank, the he went first to the sulfate project at the Hamilton plant in Bartlesville and to the sulfate plant in Borger, TX, until drafted into the Navy in December 1944. He trained at the U.S. Great Lakes Naval Training Station north of Chicago. After passing the Eddy test he attended the Great Lakes Primary Radio Tech School. Later that summer, he went to Secondary Radio Tech School at the Naval Air Technical Training Center on Ward Island, Corpus Christi, Texas, where he remained to teach radio and radar to other service members until his honorable discharge in July 1946. Morgan used to comment that he "joined the Navy but never left the Central Time Zone." On December 27, 1945, he married Floy, whom he had met through college classmate Vaughn Kygar, Floy's brother. Floy and Morgan were married at her parents farm near Hewins, KS. Following discharge from the Navy, Morgan and Floy returned briefly to Bartlesville before moving to Columbus, Ohio, for Morgan to attend Ohio State University through GI Bill benefits and a Gerard Swope Fellowship. He earned both master's and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering while Floy worked at Battelle Memorial Institute. Their son Kirk Morgan Warzel was born in 1950 in Columbus. Shortly afterward they returned to Phillips in Bartlesville where their daughter Sharon Dale Warzel was born in 1952. From 1954 until 1962, the Warzel family lived in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where Phillips was contracting with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, now the U.S. Department of Energy, to study the feasibility of nuclear power production. This work took Morgan for six weeks in 1959 to the Sellafield nuclear site near Seascale, Cumbria, England. For most of 1962-1970, the Warzels lived in Bartlesville, except for 11 months in 1966 when Morgan was in Lyon, France, studying a process for making nylon from cyclohexane. In 1970, Floy and Morgan were transferred to Greenville, S.C., with Phillips Fibers Corporation. They made a final work-related move back to Bartlesville in 1977. Morgan retired from Phillips in 1985 and spent his first year of retirement helping on the Kygar farm after the death of Floy's brother Vaughn. A lifelong member of the National Rifle Association, Morgan enjoyed hunting game in Idaho and birds on family farm properties in Kansas and Oklahoma. In 2000, he flew to Argentina to hunt doves with longtime Bartlesville friend Losson Winkler. Morgan was an avid skeet shooter, providing his two grandchildren plus many relatives and friends with happy memories of being taught by a master at the Bartlesville Sportsmen's Club. An accomplished hobbyist photographer, Morgan processed black-and-white film in a makeshift darkroom. Whether using black-and-white or his preferred Kodachrome film, he documented almost every image by date and place, f-stop, shutter speed, flash or not, camera and lens, and details and identification for each photo frame. Other hobbies included grafting pecan trees, learning to use his side-by-side Mac and PC computers, traveling, keeping abreast of current events, and exercising religiously at the Phillips gym. When driving to the gym was no longer advisable, Morgan became known for the regularity and swiftness with which he walked the halls at Green Country Village senior living in Bartlesville or at Sunrise at Flatirons senior living in Broomfield, Colo., where he and Floy lived for 2 1/2 years, or, after Floy's death in December 2017, at Sunrise of Westminster. Morgan was optimistic about the future, convinced that "the ease of transportation and the ease of communication will bring people together," and often mused, "I wonder what the world will be like 100 years from now?" Repetition of this question eventually begat eye-rolling by his children until later when they began posing the question themselves. Survivors included: son Kirk Morgan Warzel of Idaho Falls, ID; daughter Sharon Warzel and Kevin Ryan of Broomfield, CO; grandson Jordan (Jenny) Ryan of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; granddaughter Melissa (Kevin) Fore of Chesterfield, MO; great-grandchildren Logan and Lillian Ryan of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, and Jacob and Sean Fore of Chesterfield, MO. Morgan and Floy were active members of the Church of Christ and requested memorial donations go to Hope Harbor Children's Home, PO Box 1047, Claremore, OK.
