"It was at Corson, SD, in the later years of the 1930's when Fred Henjum and Martha Sorum first spied each other. This date led to many other dates which finally resulted in the ultimate outcome--marriage. It took place on September 22, 1940, at North Split Rock Church." "Fred Henjum was born June 15, 1910, to John and Lily Henjum on a farm in the Garretson vicinit. He started his education in a country school two miles from home. He walked the two miles many times until his dad acquired a pony and buggy for Fred and his brother Donald to drive. Their country school, riverview, was aptly named as Split Rock Creek ran within 100 yards of the school house. The kids were either getting soaked by slipping in the water during the warm days or freezxing by falling through the ice during the winter months. Fred was a graduate of Garretson High School in 1929. He farmed with his father and brother until 1938 when he took a two-year course in printing and journalism at South Dakota State College in Brookings. That summer he worked for a newspaper, the Hamlin County Republican, at Castlewood, S.D. It was in the fall of 1940 that he and his girl friend decided they had henough of this "fooling around", so the knot was tied on a beautiful Sunday, September 22. Together they purchased the Sentinal Printing business at Salem, S.D. At this time Fred's father, John Henjum, became very ill. He wasn't able to farm any longer, so Fred and Martha decided to go back to farming. Besides the usual farm crops, they managed to raise three kids: Jim, a self-employed auto body repair man, lives in rural Harrisburg with his wife Karen and three children--Ronny, Shelia and John. Marian, an accomplished artist resides with her husband David Johnson at Sioux Falls. Bill, who lives in Garretson, is a self-employed carpenter and a part-time mail carrier. The couple maintained other interests along with the responsibilities of farming. Martha was a Member of Corson Extension Club for many years and past president of the Garretson Study Club. She was affiliated with the Garretson O.E.S. where she was elected as Worthy Matron in 1960 and became past president of Spirit Canyon Chapter #147 O.E.S. Fred was accepted as a brother of Palisades Lodge #201, Garretson, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1960. He was also a member of Spirit Canyon Chapter O.E.S. and became Worthy Patron in 1960 when his wife was Worthy Matron. He was also a member of El Riad Shrine and several farm organizations. Fred and Martha Henjum and their family were active members of Zion Lutheran Church of Garretson. It was in 1966 when Fred and Martha Henjum decided they had enough of battling the elements, so moved (sic) into Garretson. They sold the farm in 1968. However, this did not signify the end of activity for them. Martha was selected as activity director at Luther Manor in Sioux Falls, but soon accepted the same position at the newly opened Palidade Manor in Garretson. She held this position for five years, while helping to organize and become the first president of Palisade Manor Auxillary. Fred kept busy along with two other retired farmers, Leland Anderson and Elton Posey, in remodeling and constructing new houses in this city, and in 1967 he became a real estate salesman. He authored a book, "Ye Olde Swill Barrell", which the artwork was done by their daughter, Marian. In 1968 Fred was selected as a board member of the newly organized Garretson Community Development Corporation. This group distinguished itself by fulfilling the community's drea of building Palisade Manor which opened to the public on March 1, 1971. On sEptember 21, 1972, this adventuresome couple started a newspaper, the Garretson Weekly. This turned out to be a successful venture, but also a full time one, as recorded elsewhere in this book. It might be interesting to note that the Henjums also started the first newspaper to represent Brandon-Corson-Valley Springs on February 7, 1974. This proved to be too time consuming, so consequently the Tri City Reporter was sold to Mr. Preston Ver Meer on May 29, 1975. Managing a newspaper was a big job, and Fred and Martha were each facing 70 years of active life. The finally decided to sell their Weekly to Sanders Printing Company on November 24, 1981. In 1980 they moved to Sioux Falls, but still kept themselves busy. They Joined First Lutheran Church and became members of the Bergeland Center for Senior Citizens. Martha keeps active with E.L.C.W and various Circles. She affiliated with Jasper Chapter #8, O.E.S. and also the Past Matrons of that organization. Fred affiliated with Unity Lodge #130 AF and AM, the Golden K Kiwanis Club and Gavelers High Twelve Club #91. They are both still trying to improve their bowling average by participating in two Senior Leage bowling clubs. Their home is at 3101 South Willow, Sioux Falls, where they hope to live out theri remaining time on this good earth."
