Description	:	He was the son of Fred Milan & Alice Carey (Stickney) Gilman and the husband of Florence Russell. They married on October 12, 1919 Fred worked for the National Forest Service and supervised workers of CCC Camps during the Great Depression. The Kancamaugus Highway (Rt 112) from Lincoln, NH to Conway, NH was surveyed by a crew lead by Fred. In retirement Fred enjoyed gardening and did small engine repairs out of his garage. They married on October 12, 1919 Fred worked for the National Forest Service and supervised workers of CCC Camps during the Great Depression. The Kancamaugus Highway (Rt 112) from Lincoln, NH to Conway, NH was surveyed by a crew lead by Fred. In retirement Fred enjoyed gardening and did small engine repairs out of his garage. As children we could always get a ride on his farm tractor, riding in the bucket or learning how to drive it. During the Summer, his garden was full of fresh vegetables, and berries (raspberry and strawberries). I remember fondly working in the garden to picking berries, corn, beans, potatoes, beets, carrots, and more. If we wanted to go fishing, he would find us a good 'switch' or small tree branch, put a line and a hook on it for us and we could go dig for worms in his mulch pile under the big crab apple tree by the garden. He kept chocolate treats in his desk and we could always get a Hershey's kiss. Since his wife Florence would not allow any alcohol in the house, he would keep a small bottle in a tool cupboard out in the garage. Although I have to say I don't recall every seeing him drink. On Sunday mornings, he would drop Florence off at church and come by our house to visit until it was time to pick her up. The picture of him on the memorial site with his prize buck, 230 lbs, was shot with his Savage 250/3000 rifle which he gifted to me. The other picture is with his sons, Murray, Laurence, and Paul. In his last year with us, I moved in with him at his home in Woodstock. He didn't want any 'help' from his sons but had no problem with his youngest grandson, 16 at the time, to come live with him. I lived in the same community so it wasn't like I had to actually move. He was a gentle man who loved to relax on the 'piazza' (porch) during the warmer months. But he used to say he would always keeping working in his garden as "the rocking chair has taken many of his friends". In the Summers my sister would bring her horse down to his house as he had a large field for him. The horses name was Shihazi but Grampa just called him Sam as he couldn't pronounce Shi - ha - zee. We had many Sunday and holiday dinners at their house and my grandmother Florence, having gone to 'finishing school' for girls was where we got any of our table manners. When asked if we were going to say grace before eating, Fred would often tease her by say, "Grace isn't coming today, let's eat" or "God bless those who get the most, Amen" Anyhow, these are just some things that come into mind.
