He reached out to take one of the horses by the bit to quiet it, and as he did so the animal reared up and struck him in the lower abdomen with one of its front feet, felling him to the ground in awful agony and rendering him unconscious. The family at once summoned medical attention, but the physician being unable to ease the pain, rightly concluded there must be serious internal injuries, though the surface disclosed but slight abrasions to indicate this. Two other physicians.... Ricardian consult consultation,.... and an operation was decided upon as the only hope of saving the man's life. The operation disclosed a rupture of the intestines, and tho' skillfully performed the operation failed to stay the blighting hand of death, and about 11:30 Sunday night, just 36 hours after receiving his injuries, Mr. Schellhamer died. He was born in Germany in 1860 and came to America in 1882. In 1888 he was married to Miss Katie Mundt, who survives him. He was 46 years of age at the time of his death. Fred Schellhamer was a good, industrious, upright and honorable man; kind to his family and ever ready to lend it his neighbors a helping hand. He started a few years ago at the bottom of the ladder, with but little of this world's goods, and at the time of his death had by faithful work and good business management acquired nearly, if not quite, a clear title to his farm. He carried $1000 benefit certificate in Castalia Lodge M.B.A. He leaves a wife, five daughters and a son tomorrow and the loss of one who was a kind husband and loving father in all that name implies. The funeral was held Tuesday at Castalia, conducted by Rev. Paulson, of Luana. Interment in Castalia cemetery. Card of thanks.
