Wood died at his home in Eagle township Monday afternoon following a brief illness from pneumonia. The announcement of his death came as a severe shock to his many friends in this community as only a few were apprised of the serious nature of his illness. He was taken sick about three weeks ago with the grippe but no alarm was felt regarding his condition during the first week of his illness, and it was not until then that symptoms of pneumonia developed and he was obliged to take to his bed. His condition then became critical but hope was entertained for his recovery up until the day of his death. Brief funeral services were held at the home Wednesday morning, conducted by Elder D. L. Cox, pastor of Mt. Joy church, and the remains were then brought to the Methodist church in this city where services were held at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. H. Young, and interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. The deceased was the only son of Israel L. Wood of this city. He was born at Nora Springs, Iowa, Feb. 3, 1881, and at the time of his death had attained the age of 35 years and 18 days. He came with his father to Hawarden about twenty-five years ago, and except for a period of about four years which he spent in Sioux City, has been a resident of this community during that time. He spent a number of years with his father on a farm near here and during a part of time attended the public schools in Hawarden. Later he accepted a position as a traveling salesman for a Sioux City wholesale house and it was while he was thus engaged that he was united in marriage with Miss Nellie Spencer in Sioux City June 21, 1906. After his marriage he moved back to Hawarden and engaged in farming in Eagle township where he has since continued to reside. Besides his wife, father, stepmother and other relatives, he is survived by three small daughters, Helen, aged 7; Fern, aged 5; and Alice, aged 3. In the death of Fred Wood this community loses one of its finest Christian citizens. Clean, high-minded, a splendid neighbor, he was a man among men, one whom it was an honor to know as a friend. To be thus stricken down in the very prime of his life and usefulness in the midst of home and family seems a cruel blow and one that is hard to reconcile. The sympathy of the entire community is extended with one accord to the sorrowing relatives, heart broken wife and fatherless children. Out of town relatives and friends who were here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Goodrich of Cleghorn, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Rapalee, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gale and daughter, Mrs. Frank Gale, Miss Alice Spencer and Albert Spencer of Sioux City, Mrs. Curtis and son and Mrs. Vera Hendrix of Vermillion.
