Description	:	Oelwein Daily Register, Wed. Aug 11, 1948. Fred Walters Briggs, only child of Chauncy J. Briggs and Mary E. Walters, was born at Eden, WI Oct 11, 1862 and departed this life Aug 5, 1948 at the age of 85 years, nine months and 24 days. At the age of six, he came with his mother to the prairies east of the present site of Oelwein. Aug 11, 1948. Fred Walters Briggs, only child of Chauncy J. Briggs and Mary E. Walters, was born at Eden, WI Oct 11, 1862 and departed this life Aug 5, 1948 at the age of 85 years, nine months and 24 days. At the age of six, he came with his mother to the prairies east of the present site of Oelwein. He came on stage coach the greater part of the way, arriving at Otsego, a little post office and stage stop two miles east of Oelwein where they were met by his father who had come in advance to locate a home, a bare one-room shack. At the age of 12, he with his parents moved to the farm five miles east of Oelwein where he grew to manhood. On Dec. 25, 1889 he married Anna M. Lincoln and took his bride to this same home where these four people lived until his mother passed away in Sept 1903. In 1919, He together with his wife and father, moved into Oelwein. His father passed away Feb. 1927, He was a member of the Presbyterian church of Oelwein and always took an active interest in church. He had been in poor health for the past two and one-half years. He is survived by his wife, an aged aunt Mrs. Alice Large of Oakfield, WI and many cousins and countless friends. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Aug 7, 1948. Dr. L. W. Hauter was in charge. Burial was at Stanley.
