They lived to see the change in our culture from horse and buggy, horse and plow, shopping from the Sears catalog, and dirt roads to seeing man circle the earth. Fred was born 7 years after Wild Bill Hickok was killed in Deadwood, Dakota Territories and Custer's Last Stand in Montana. He was born in 1883, the year that the first electric street lights were hung from light poles in Roselle, New Jersey. Fred and Anna lived through the era of building roads beyond dirt and gravel, the automobile, and the airplane. Anna died in 1968, within one year of man landing on the moon. They farmed all of their lives in Cloud Co, KS, except for a brief stay in town. During that stay, Fred worked for the ice plant and Anna ran a rooming house and cooked pies for restaurants. They had eight children, all born and raised in the Concordia, KS area: Max, Lois, Arleen, Ed, Norris & Margaret (twins), Fred Jr (Spud) and Jeanne. Fred and Anna were the last of their families to be farmers. None of their children were to become farmers. This was a break in the way of life for both families that had existed for generations. Their descendants numbered 192 (including in-laws) in the 1990's and has certainly grown since that time.
