A lifelong resident of Coward, he was a son of the late Dalton McKay, Sr., and Veronica Brown McKay. He graduated from J.C. Lynch High School and Florence-Darlington Technical College. He was retired from the S.C. Department of Transportation. Mr. McKay entered into the U.S. Air Force in 1964. During his enlistment, he was a Fire Protection Specialist and was stationed at Shemya Air Force Base (Shemya, Alaska) for one year and at Dyess Air Force Base (Abilene, Texas) for three years. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1968. He was an active member of Elim Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Effingham Ruritan Club and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was predeceased by a brother, Dalton McKay, Jr.
