Description	:	Frederic "Fred " Whitcher King, 87, died at his home in Lyme, New Hampshire, on Monday, November 2, 2009. Mr. King was born in Barton on January 4, 1922, the eldest of six children of Walter and Doris (Whitcher) King. Read More	Frederic "Fred " Whitcher King, 87, died at his home in Lyme, New Hampshire, on Monday, November 2, 2009. Mr. King was born in Barton on January 4, 1922, the eldest of six children of Walter and Doris (Whitcher) King. He grew up in West Glover, where his elementary school years were completed at the Wright School. After graduating from Barton Academy, he worked on the family farm. He met his future wife, Catherine Doyle, when she started teaching at the Wright School. They married July 6, 1943, in Albany. He was employed by Clarence Young in West Glover and later by Hackett Farms in Derby Line. While employed by Mr. Hackett, he had the opportunity to hone his carpentry skills and, after moving to West Burke, he started working for himself as a carpenter. When work was hard to find in the Northeast Kingdom, the family moved to the Upper Valley where he found employment with Blair Construction and subsequently with Millard Uline. In 1959, he started his own construction business and built numerous homes and barns in the area. He was a selectman of Lyme from 1967 to 1973. During his children's growing years, he was a staunch supporter of their activities in music, sports, drama, and academics. As his family expanded, he welcomed gathering the family for holiday celebrations and reunions. He enjoyed deer hunting and was an avid snowmobiler for many years. In 2002, the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association honored him with its Groomer of the Year Award in recognition of the hours he'd spent preparing trails for the enjoyment of other snowmobile enthusiasts. He and his wife frequented many of the area's town dances. He enjoyed gardening, camping, exploring back roads, and playing card games with family and friends. He appreciated being able to view deer, turkeys, and bear from the rural home where he resided for almost 60 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years in January; by his parents; and by his sisters: Janice Butler, Barbara Perron Kinsley, Carolyn Perron, and Sherry Perron Muller. He is survived by his children: Nancy Fellows of Hopkinton, New Hampshire, Martha Jones of Manassas Park, Virginia, Cynthia Baggett of Alexandria, Virginia, Sandra Simkulet of Andover, Kansas, Stephen King of Tolland, Connecticut, Colleen King of Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Susan Unsworth of Sunapee, New Hampshire; by his 12 grandchildren; by eight great-grandchildren; by his brother and sister-in-law Donald and Harriet King of West Glover; and his brother-in-law Arland Butler of Irasburg. In his memory, his family encourages sharing the enjoyment of a good story or the exploration of an unfamiliar roadway. A funeral was held at the First Baptist Church of Lyme Center November 7 with burial to follow in the Highland Cemetery in Lyme. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice of Vermont and New Hampshire, P.O.
