Frederick Arthur Gross was born in Trinidad, Colorado as were all his siblings except his sister, Edith, who was born in Kansas. One male sibling was lost (noted in the 1900 & 1910 census and the Gross Family Bible has an entry for William born 29 June 1891 and death date as 8 August 1891 all in Trinidad, Los Animas Co., Colorado). In the 1900 census (enumerated on 9 June 1900) Samuel A. Gross (Fred's dad) is a farmer and has his mother Mary A. living with him and his family in Center, Russell County, Kansas. In 1910, the family had traveled from Kansas (spending some time in Texas) coming into Southern California and then on to Lake County after seeing a post card of all the hitch on the shores of Kelsey Creek - it was obviously a land of plenty. Thus, in 1910 (census dated 19 May 1910) they were in Kelseyville, CA. Fred worked on the farm with his father and brothers. He would take his sister and future wife (by horse and buggy) to board with (the family assumes - as no one actually asked anyone who knew) Sara(h)'s grandmother in Lakeport during the week while they attended Clear Lake Union High School. His enlistment date for the Navy is listed as 11 December 1917 and release date as 30 September 1921 (but there seems to be a disagreement here as the 1920 census has him listed as living in San Francisco and being a bookkeeper at a bank??) In 1919, he and Sara(h) married on April 10th in San Francisco, Ca. In the 1920 census they were listed as renting a home on Laguna Street and they had 5 boarders sharing the house with them. The 1930 census found them at 1732 Short Street in Berkeley Ca. where they had 3 children at home after losing their first child who was birthed in a hospital and Sara(h), being superstitious, would not have another child in a hospital. In 1935, they were in San Leandro, CA. but moved from there in 1936 back to Kelseyville, CA. The 1940 census finds the Gross family in Kelseyville, living not far from Fred's parents across Kelsey Creek on what was then known as Rincon Road, but is now known as Kelsey Creek Drive (2020) - his parents lived on what is now named Live Oak Drive. Life would continue on with Fred being a farmer and Sara(h) working seasonally for her brother Glenn as a bookkeeper for his pear dry yard. The children all married and gave Fred and Sara(h) 10 grandchildren. Sarah was able to enjoy 3 of her grandchildren before her early passing in May of 1952. Fred continued to farm but moved to a small ranch on the corner of Bell Hill Road and Staheli Drive. He had prunes and walnuts and raised his own worms for fishing, which was a favorite sport. This was his life for a while before he finally sold to a land developer and moved into the town of Kelseyville. He then continued working at his son-in-law's auto shop - to keep busy as he would say. He worked up until a few weeks before his death on August 19, 1984. He was a man with a lot of energy, love for his family and fellow man and a wonderful attitude toward life. Though many times people from the local press would try to interview him for an article that would appear in the newspaper, he would kindly decline.
