Description	:	Born in Bedford Co, Pennsylvania to Henderson McMurray (1819-1906) and Mary Ann Horn (1824-1891), Frederick was often called "F. A." or "Fred." His family made the trip in a covered wagon from Bedford County Pennsylvania to Cedar County, Iowa in 1852, when he was just 2. F. A. then moved with his family to Jasper County, Iowa in 1869. F. Emma Tripp, no children); Addie Belle (1879-1958, marr. Forest Gillespie, no children); Roy (1884-1973, marr. Emma Hotger, no children); and Ray (1886-1979, marr. McMurray, Auctioneer There is no occupation better calculated to make a large acquaintance than that of the auctioneer. Fred McMurray is known not only all over Jasper County, but he is known over a large portion of central Iowa, where he has cried sales. He has just completed a large sale near Dexter, and his services are frequently demanded outside of his own county. Fred began as an auctioneer in 1880, and his career has been a busy one ever since, there being frequently a rivalry as to who can first command his services. His dates are usually well filled. During the year just passed he has cried 128 sales, averaging $2,100 each. This is a big average and few men can equal it. Fred has been a resident of Jasper County for a great many years and is deservedly popular. He was the democratic candidate for sheriff of Jasper County and ran away ahead of his ticket, being elected on the face of the returns by five majority, but afterwards being counted out. The next election he was urged to stand as a candidate again, but he positively declined. The secret of Fred's success is his attention to business, his fairness and strict fidelity to the interests of his employer. He has the ability to get out of a sale all there is in it, and leave both buyer and seller in good humor and satisfied. Mr. McMurray makes his headquarters at the grocery conducted by his son Will E. McMurray, where he can be seen for dates. If an auctioneer is known by his sales, the certainly no one can question the calling of Fred McMurray. His work speaks for itself.
