Frederick August Kolterman was born at Millard, Nebr., on November 24, 1883, the son of John Kolterman and Anna Kannenbley Kolterman. He attended schools at Millard and Blair. In 1903 he and his brother Carl, began the operation of a roller mill at Blair. In the 12 years that followed, Mr. Kolterman undertook various enterprises including ranching at Atkinson for three years; spending one year in the elevator and lumber business at Fairfax, S D.; five years homesteading near Colome, S. D. then returning to Blair where he worked with his brother Carl in a variety store until 1915, when he came to Seward. At Seward, Mr. Kolterman purchased the Burke Racket Store and changed the name to the Kolterman Variety. Here he met and married Hulda Prochnow on November 10, 1918. During his 43 years in Seward, he took an active part in the business, church and social life of the town. He served as a member of the board of elders of St. John's Lutheran church for 14 years. For 21 years he was a member of the executive committee of the Board of Control of Concordia College. For these many years of service he was honored by the college at a service held in March of this year. At the age of 55 he retired from the Seward Volunteer Fire Department after 23 years of active service. Mr. Kolterman had been a director and was a past president of the Seward Chamber of Commerce. He had been a member of the Seward City Council, the Rotary Club, Seward Country Club, the Federated Nebraska Retailers, the YMCA, and wras chairman of the draft board during World War II. In 1947 his son Donald, became associated with him in the ownership of the variety store. The deceased had been a patient at Seward Memorial hospital for about a month because of a heart condition. His death occurred Sunday, July 20, 1958, at 5:10 p. m. He had attained the age of 74 years, 8 months and 26 days. He leaves to mourn, his wife; one son, Donald, of Seward, one daughter, Mrs. Gary Heinicke (Eleanor) of Midwest City, Okla.; seven grandchildren, three brothers, Carl of Blair; John of Red Oak, Iowa; Frank of Los Angeles, Calif.
