Caldwell was born in White Oak Township, Mahaska County, January 9, 1881 and died at his home three miles west of Topeka, Kansas March 10, 1922 at the age of 41 years, two months and one day. His early education was obtained in the schools near his home, and from these he came to Penn College and graduated with the class of 1905. Later he was a member of the College Board of Trustees. On September 11, 1906, he was married to Edna Johnson, also class of 1905, Penn College, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johnson, who then resided on College Avenue. To this union were born three children. Ruth Carolyn aged 14; Robert Warren aged 8 and Marjorie aged 4 years. The past ten years the Caldwell family has resided in Kansas. The first seven years of this time was at Howard and in two terms of the legislature, Fred Caldwell was a representative from Elk county. For three years their home has been in Topeka Kansas. During all the years he has been actively engaged in business and has been successful breeder of fine stock. In a very large way, he has been a man of affairs. While a student in Penn College, Fred Caldwell united with the local Friends church and by his own choice has continued his membership with the church, throughout the years of his absence. He is survived by his wife and three children, his mother, Mrs. Kate Caldwell, four brothers who are C. C. Caldwell and Earle Caldwell residing near Oskaloosa. W. A. Caldwell of the city and R. W. Caldwell of Topeka, Kansas with whom he was associated in business. Deceased attended two years law school, one at Missouri University and one at Drake University. He was active in athletics and while attending school in Missouri won intercollegiate honors at a contest in St. Louis. Fred Caldwell maintained an active interest in the affairs of the church. While residing at Howard, Kansas he was a member of the Presbyterian Church choir and president of the boy's league. Later he was a recruiting officer and many of the same boys whom he had known in other years, saw active service in the world war. In the death of Fred Caldwell, the family loses a husband and a father who was earnest and devoted and who had been untiring in his efforts to provide and care for those who were dependent on him, while the business world loses a man of sterling worth and unqualified integrity, who endeavored always to meet in a conscientious way, the serious problems of business life. Aside from those of his immediate household, a group of friends and associates suffer a conscious loss in his departure. Fremont Gazette, March 23, 1922
