In 1866 they moved to Whitehall, Wis., where the Chapin family homesteaded and there Grandmother Chapin died in 1871. Grandfather Chapin died February 12, 1914. Fred Chapin came to Fillmore County, Nebraska, in March 1884. February 3, 1885, he was married to Miss Hattie L. Aldrich, with whom for 47 years, 9 months and 2 days, he lived a very happy and useful life. To them were born five children, Pliny N. of Santa Ana, Cal., Ollie B. (Stephenson) and Roy Chapin of Fairmont, Charles S. of Casper, Wyo., and Harry S. of Omaha. There are three brothers, Charles H. of Wynona, Minn., Wallace of Chippewa Falls, Wis., and Albert of Elgin, Ill.; also one sister, Mrs. Minnie Benedict of Seward, Ill. Three sisters passed on before him, Mrs. Ida Van Slyke, Mrs. Elizabeth Short and Mary, who died at the age of 12. Mrs. Minnie Benedict and Charles h. were present for the funeral. There are nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. and Mrs. Chapin, after living on the farm now occupied by their son Ray for seventeen years, moved into Fairmont. They first lived in the house now occupied by Rev. J. M. Martin. Afterwards they purchased the home where they have lived ever since. Fred Chapin was a man who loved his home and loved to be at home, and he loved to have his children and grandchildren in his home with him. He was a kind neighbor, a loving and affectionate father and a devoted husband, always seeking to take every possible burden from the shoulders of his loved wife. He was modest, unassuming, yet uniformly pleasant and kind to everyone. Fred Chapin will be greatly missed in Fairmont. Funeral services were conducted in the Federated Church of Fairmont Monday afternoon at 2:30 by the pastor, Rev. Isaac Cassel, the sermon being given by Rev. W. F. Perry of the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Lincoln. The body was laid to rest in the Fairmont Cemetery.
