Mills, formerly one of the most prominent citizens of Atchison, died at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the hospital of the soldiers' home, Leavenworth, where he went three months ago for treatment. Mr. Mills built the present residence of the Ingalls family, when he li9ved in Atchison, and was a law partner of C. K. Wells. The firm of Mills & Wells is said to have made $150,000 in a Central Branch land deal, and went from here to Kansas City, Kas., twelve or fifteen years ago. they invested their money in separate parts of that town. Mr. Wells seems to have struck the right section, and is reputed to have largely increased his possessions. Mr. Mills, on the other hand, was less fortunate, and lost his money. Ten years ago his health failed him, and he had a long spell of sickness which took him near to death's door. He recovered, to the gratification of his family and friends, but did not regain his old time mental vigor and capacity as an attorney and business man. His fatal illness began two years go. Mr. Mills was 61 years old, and came to Atchison shortly after the close of the Civil war. He had served, although little more than a boy, in a Michigan regiment. Mr. Mills taught school after coming here, studying law at leisure times. He was one of the promoters of the Big syndicate, famous in Atchison boom times and built a steam dummy line to Prospect Park hotel, now the Wells asylum. Mrs. Mills is a sister of ex-Gov. John A. Martin. Seven children, four girls and three sons, were born to them. Three of the girls and one son are now married. One son died in childhood and is buried in the family lot in Mt. Vernon cemetery. The body of Mr. Mills will be brought here for burial, and will arrive at 6 o'clock this evening. The funeral will occur at 2:30 to-morrow from the residence of Henry T. Smith, 529 South Fourth street. Old friends invited.
