Evidently according to Gertrude Alley, moved to Denver in 1888.
Carlos Alley died in Mexico and is supposed buried in Texas??
Went in the army as a private and came out as 3" Sergeant in 40th Wisconsin Infantry Reg. Company B, GAR Denver #081. Enlisted 14 May 1864 musterered out date 16 Sept 1864. Residence at Beloit, Wisc. Applied 5 April 1880 355960 He was going to college when the civil war happened. He served until he was sent home for his health after being in hospital in Memphis. Gertrude says"He finished his college course of AB at Beloit college and after a year I think at Union Theological Siminary in Chicago receives a A M" Beloit college is a congregational college? At his death belonged to the Denver Presbyterian. He became ill in the Tenn Heat and had to muster out of the Army. Went back to school in Beloit where he had been when he entered the Army.
Became paster of the Congregational Church in Weeping Water in July 1866 and remain until 1870 when he went on to Crete, Saline Co. to help start Beloit college and churchs. He made $100 a year for two years to get this started. He resigned 25 Jun 1874. In 1871 the Alleys went to Wilbur to be minister. His daughter (Gertrude) recalls from hearsay rather then memory, Pleasant Hill, Arapahoe, Bartley, Haigler and Champion before the family went to Denver. In Denver he did religious writings for magazines and books. He wrote one at the age of 85, blindness necessitating dictation, but his memory serving for outline and references. She says she was 8 when the family moved to Denver, which would be 1888. (I believe actually moved in 1889)
Charles, Frederick and Jane immigrated to the US. Henry, John, Matilda, and Anne went to New Zealand. This was in 1856.(he would be 18 when he came over and his brother Charles was about 24) Was told Durion, Queens Co with the estate name" Mathin Risa as Clonan Hill." The Sides family now lives at Clonan Hill.
When the civil war starts, Frederick is in Wisconsin. Company B, 40 Reg Inf, Wisc, Res. Beloit, inlisted 14 May 1864, Inlisted as Sergt. Mustered out at Milwaukee, Wi 16 Sep 1864. On 7 April 1866 they marry in Pewaukee, Waukesha Co, Wisc,Frederick is listed as living in Mt Vernon, Neb, and they have a child born in Weeping
Waters, Cass Co, Neb in 1867. In spring of 1870, after the census taker comes in Cass Co, they move on to Saline County, Nebraska. He goes to Crete under the auspices of the American Home Missionary Assoc in 1871 Here he is a presbyterian/ congregational minister and helps to start Crete college, now Doane College in. In 1880 he is probably in Haigler, Neb. In 1888/9 he goes to Denver and they are listed in the 1900 census as running a boarding house. I have not found yet if he still preached or if he was a teacher or just retired. In 1919 he writes a small book called "The Dignity of Man". I have a copy of this book and he lamblasts the Catholic Religion. According to Gertrude, they lived Nebraska City, Weeping Water, Neb; Plattsmouth, Cass Co, Neb; Crete, Saline Co, Neb; Wilbur, Saline co, Neb; Pleasant Hill, Saline co, Neb; Beaver City, Furnus Co, Neb; Arapahoe, Furnus Co, Neb; Bartley,Red Willow co, Neb where another school was started; Haigler, Dundy Co, Neb, 1888 Denver,Arapahoe Co, Co,. In June 1891 he is listed as a civil war vet from Wis and living in Chase, Neb. (So is the 1888 date for Denver Correct?) Later half of ministorial worked in Presbyterian Church and engaged in Mercantile.
Birth and Death from death Certificate #2188 Denver, Colorado. Died in a nursing home in Denver and was listed as being senile.

Under schools. The first summer school in Crete was taught by Miss Merrill, beginning April, 1871. The upper story of the building erected for a college boarding hall which was built chiefly throught the personal efforts of the Rev. Frederick Alley, was used as a schoolroom.
UNDER DORCHESTER--
Rev. Frederick Alley came the spring of 1870.Some time during the first few weeks in the history of Dorchester, the first Sermon was preached by Rev. Frederick Alley, a Congregational minister.
Wilbur--
The Congregational Church was the first church organization in the town of Wilber, having been started in 1873 by the Rev. Fred Alley. A Church house was built during the same season, at a cost of $2,100.
Mr Alley assuming all the responsibility for its erection with the assistance of George W Parker, George Tracy and Mr Ray.
CRETE-CHURCH
Congregational Church. The first services held by the Congregationalists was in the winter of 1870-71, when the Rev. Frederick Alley began preaching in Crete under the auspices of the American Home Missionary Society. On March 12 1872, Rev. Mr Alley, assisted by the Rev. O W Merrill, then superintendent of Home Missions for the state of Neb, the First Congregational church was organized with the following membership: Rev. F Alley, Mrs M C Alley, Martin L Cooper, Mrs Mary L Cooper.
Rev. Mr Alley continued as pastor of the church until January 1873.
He was in a Nursing home when he died. He had sinility and evidently had cronic diareah when he died. According to the autograph book they are living in Arapahoe Neb in 1886, 87, 88
and poss Haigler in 1888/89. Everyone says went to Denver in 1888 but Ida's Autograph book has signatures in Haigler in 1888 and 1889 so may have not moved until 1889. They are in the Denver City Arapahoe Co, Colo 1900 census, 6th Precinct.

"To Whom it may concern:
This is to certify that I, Frederick Alley, am the father of Frederick C Alley now residing in El Paso, Texas.
"I was born in the Queens County, Ireland Jan 19 1838, sailed from Liverpool to New York, about May 1856, declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States October 31, 1863, cast my vote for Mr Lincoln for president; enlisted in the U. S. service in Company B, 40th Wisconsin Infantry, and have been for years receiving a pension from the US governmant; recieved final naturalization papers March 10, 1887, as per original copies enclosed. Continuous residence in the U.S. since 1856.
I am a retired Presbyterian clergyman, will be 80 years old January 19th next. Have two degrees from Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin, B.A. and M.A. Am now Commander of the largest GAR post in this city.
Have had but one brother in this country. He served over four years in the 5th Iowa Cavalry. His only son John Alley, is now Major in First National Guard, stationed until lately at Fort Bowie, Texas, possiblly, there yet.
If any of our stock proves traiterous, courtmartial and shoot him, for he would disgrace his ancestry."

" The Alleys, allegedly of Norman blood, were from the English Dales, and the "Irish" branch had gone to Ireland with Cromwell's army. They lived on the Loughill estate near Durrow in County Laois ( or Laoighis). (Queens) The Wards lived on the Montrath estate next to Loughill, and the Alley and Ward Children had known each other since childhood and played together in the stream that separated the two estates."
The Francis that was born 29 Jan 1829 may be him.(If they misread his date of birth) there may be an error in the Irish record THE RIC

The original land was in County Kilkenney in part of Queens Co. Ballinskill on the Queens side and Durrow in Kilkenney were the towns close by.
"My grandfather was a typical sport. He had his hunting horses and hounds and was a hard drinker. In his earlier life he had tutors in the house for the children. He recklessly killed two fine blooded horses and eventurally filled a premature grave. When his affairs were finally settled, everything was gone except an 80 acre tract that wnet to the oldest named Peter and the home was called "Lowhill". The younger sons, never had been educated or trained for any business, had to seek some kind of subsistance at once. Fred, Frank and Harry went into the Army. One of them into the Queens Lifeguards, another into the Fusileirs, and Harry into the Cavalry. Except for Harry they were all fine specimans of Physical manhood, over six feet in height. My father went into the "Constabulary" and served twenty one years. Left as a Sergeant with a pension of 18 per annum. After leaving the police force he rented a farm of about 20 acres on "Clonan Hill" about 3 miles from the town of Mountrath and placed his family on a farm. Uncle Harry settled near us but died when I was a boy. My father drank a good deal in his early life, but managed to keep his job on the Police Force. In later life, he was strictly temperate and in all respects a good citizen. He lived to about 80."
Uncle Peter married a catholic which estranged him from the rest of the family although he, Frederick, used to go see him. And Peter would come to visit the family but would not bring his wife or children.

According to our Alumni directories, Frederick (or Frederic
as the spelling was inconsistent) was a student at Beloit
College from 1861 until his graduation in 1865. He came to
Beloit from "Ireland," likely an Ireland, Wisconsin rather
than the country. (I set her right on that score!)
During the Civil War in 1864 Frederick enlisted in the Union
Army Infantry for 100 days and served in Memphis, Tennessee
from May-September.
At commencement in 1865 Frederick gave an oration called
"The Inevitable Development of Ideas in Hisotry."
By 1871 Frederick had moved to Plattsmouth, Nebraska and
worked as a minister. In 1872, he moved to Crete, Nebraska
and continued his work in the ministry. From 1873-1881
Frederick resided in Wilber, Nebraska, then moving to
Arapahoe, Nebraska until 1890. By 1891 Frederick had moved
to Denver, Colorado where he remained until his death on
March 28, 1925. In 1899, he began work in Denver as an
editor in addition to his work in the Presbyterian ministry,
though he retired from both jobs in 1910. |
