Description	:	Frederick was the son of Samuel & Catharine Nesbitt Gripe. The Gripe families left Pennsylvania in the early 1800's settling in Montgomery Co. Ohio. By 1830 Samuel & family had moved to Wayne Co. Indiana. There Frederick married Anna Imel Neff July 2, 1832. Anna was a widow with a daughter named Mary Neff born May 15, 1828. Frederick's parents didn't approve of his marrying a widow. At some point Frederick changed the spelling of his name to Gripp, possibly to separate himself from disapproving relatives. The Gripe families left Pennsylvania in the early 1800's settling in Montgomery Co. Ohio. By 1830 Samuel & family had moved to Wayne Co. Indiana. There Frederick married Anna Imel Neff July 2, 1832. At some point Frederick changed the spelling of his name to Gripp, possibly to separate himself from disapproving relatives. In the 1830's Frederick established a distillery in Rochester, Indiana. When the family decided to moved west it was sold for $3000 in gold. The money was tucked away in a whisky barrel for the westward journey. The family arrived in Union Co. Iowa on October 6, 1854. They first built a log cabin south of Thayer near Grand River, but built & sold several cabins over the years. Frederick was an educated man & active in church services being called what was then a "Reader." He was said to be a forceful speaker. He & Anna had 7 children. They were the parents of Phoebe[Noah M. Jackson], Peter[Mary Wellman], Rachel[Garrett Reasoner], William H.[Martha J. Katzenbarger], Jacob F.[Mary E. Katzenbarger], Isaac Byron and Anna Imel[m. 1st J.W.C. Carmicle, 2nd Oliver Johnston, 3rd John Airy] Gripp. There is no tombstone for Frederick Gripp, nor is he listed in the county cemetery book. The family history says he was buried in the old North Hopeville Cemetery in what is "now a pasture or field".
