Hamilton County Pioneer Buried Mr Fred Herbig, 84 died at his home at the edge of Marquette on Friday morning after an illness of three weeks. Death was attributed to old age. Mr Herbig was born in Germany and came with his parents to America when about 16 years of age and lived in Stephenson County, Illinois. He moved to Iowa and then in 1879 he came west to Hamilton County, Nebraska where he spent the past 56 years in and around Marquette. He was united in marriage to Sophia Gerwig in 1877 and to this union were born three children, Oscar, Sarah and Edward. She passed away on June 22nd, 1894. On August 12th, 1896 he took for his second wife, Miss Anna Doll and to this union three children, a daughter, who died in infancy, and two sons, Roy and Roelyn were born. Mr Herbig never learned a trade of any kind as was the custom of the time and country from which he came, having left Germany at about 16 years of age. He therefore spent his time working on a farm which occupation he kept up after coming to Hamilton County until 1909 when he retired from active work and settled down on an acreage tract known as the H D Hall place where he lived until he was called to eternal rest February 1st, 1935. He was one of the pioneers of Hamilton County, having seen this county develop from a virgin state to what it is today and has been, having experienced the ups and downs which go with pioneering. Mr Herbig was a devout Christian gentleman, his heart always being with the church and its teachings. He formerly was a member of the United Brethren Church but later was affiliated with the Marquette Methodist Church and was the senior member of the Board of Trustees. He was an upright citizen, a conscientious worker, a loving husband and father, and of a friendly, helpful disposition. For the past year his health has been failing rapidly, but until three weeks ago made his usual trip to town. All that medical care could do, as well as the kindly hands of his loved ones was made available and he slipped peacefully away to enjoy a long rest after an active life of 84 years, 7 months and 6 days. He leaves to mourn his demise, his wife, four sons, Oscar, of Deboise, Idaho; Edward, Roy and Roelyn of Marquette, and one daughter, Mrs Sarah Willis of Mullen, Nebr., 8 grandchildren and four great grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the M E church at three o'clock Sunday afternoon. The church was taxed to its capacity with the many friends. Services were in charge of Rev W E Wilson and music was furnished by Mrs V G Johnson, Mrs Frank Gion, T W Seiver, and W S Seiver. Pall bearers were V G Johnson, P F Larsen, Mike Johnson, Marcus Jensen, William Mideke and Ira Fye. Interment was at Richland cemetery.
