Description	:	Frederick J. "Mick" McGowan, 86, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at his home in Jackson Center. He was born March 17, 1922, in Shelby County, the son of the late Otto McGowan and Luella Ambos McGowan. On Jan. 23, 1948, he married Doris Marie Madden Mcowan, who preceded him in death Oct. 8, 2007. Frederick formally owned a restaurant in Jackson Center on the corner where JC Pizza is now. Read More	Frederick J. "Mick" McGowan, 86, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at his home in Jackson Center. He was born March 17, 1922, in Shelby County, the son of the late Otto McGowan and Luella Ambos McGowan. On Jan. 23, 1948, he married Doris Marie Madden Mcowan, who preceded him in death Oct. 8, 2007. Frederick formally owned a restaurant in Jackson Center on the corner where JC Pizza is now. He worked at the Jackson Center Farm Bureau and was a salesman for Lima Distributors, where he retired in 1992. His hobbies included hunting, watching sports and he was a catcher on the JC men's fast-pitch softball team for 15 years. He and his late wife Doris also spent many memorable winters in Sebring, Fla., where he loved to fish and spend time with the many new buddies he met at their campsite. He was a very proud citizen of Jackson Center and the United States. His loving manner and kindness will be sadly missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his many friends. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Jackson Center, where he had been president of the congregation, belonged to the Brotherhood and was a deacon. He was a member of the Jackson Center Village Council for 16 years, of the Jackson Center VFW Post 3316, served on the Farm Bureau Council of Shelby County and the Shelby County Soldier and Sailor Relief Commission for more than 35 years. He joined the Scherer Post 493, American Legion, Jackson Center, in 1946 an served as the commander for four and half years starting in 1948. He served as membership chairman, first and second vice commander, chairman of Boys State and chairman of the Heart Fund Drive. He was instrumental in starting the Ray Ford Nurses Scholarshp and was in charge of the monthly chicken fries at the post for many, many years. He was also second district commander in 1963. Mick was called into service of his country in October 1942. He took his basic training at Camp Atterbury, Ind., with the 83rd Infantry Division, which was comprised mostly of Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Kentucky soldiers. Upon completion of his basic training, he was shipped to Europe from Camp Kilmer, N.J., in 1944, where he arrived in Wales, England for invasion training. He was promoted to staff sergeant and landed on Omaha Beach three days after D-Day. He served in five major battles, including Normandy, Brittany, Ardennes, Rhineland and the "Battle of the Bulge." While he was serving his country overseas, Sgt. McGowan prepared three meals per day at camp. He was discharged on Nov. 20, 1945, at Fort Indiantown, Pa. While in the military he received the Bronze Star for service above and beyong the call of duty for feeding troops in combat zones. He also earned the Good Conduct Medal, marksman badge and various other ribbons. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Mike Phillips) Wise of Huntsville; son, David (Joyce) McGowan of Jackson Center; five grandchildren, Cory (Sara) Thompson of Jackson Center, Lesli (Jim) Andrews of Columbia, Mo., and Kevin, Katrina and Keira McGowan, all of Jackson Center; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Thompson and Emily Andrews; two step-great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph (Pat) McGowan of Jackson Center; sisters, Louise (Fritz) Egbert of Wapakoneta and Mary (Harry) Glett of Bellefontaine; sister-in-law, Mary McGowan of Jackson Center and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Ruby Nell Woolley and Kathryn Waltz, and brother, Eldon Ambos McGowan. Funeral services were held at Grace Lutheran Church by Pastor Kent Hollis. Burial was in St. Mark's Church Cemetery, Clay Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Jackson Center Education Foundation, Grace Lutheran Church and Jackson Center American Legion. Sanford Funeral Home in Jackson Center was in charge of arrangements.
