The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, April 21, 1892 ======== Fred Shank, 81, for many years a resident of Nelson and this vicinity, died in his room at the Cliff Hotel here early this morning. His health has been none too good for some time, but it had been believed that he had shown some improvement during the past two days. Death came as he slept, probably sometime around seven o'clock. Funeral services will be conducted in the Klawitter Chapel here Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. Clarence V. Powell in charge. Burial will be made in the Nelson cemetery. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, February 7, 1947 ========= Frederick John Shank was born in Red Oak, Iowa, January 11, 1866 and passed away at Nelson, Nebr., February 6, 1947, at the age of 81 years, 3 weeks and 5 days. When about eight years of age he came with his parents to Nelson and lived here until the year 1925, when he went to Wyoming. He moved back to Nelson about six years ago and lived here until his death. On April 19, 1892, he was united to marriage to Miss Phoebe Elizabeth Gammill and to this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Gladys Weymouth of Osgood, Missouri. Besides his daughter he leaves to mourn his passing, his son-in-law George Weymouth, four grandchildren, Mrs. G.F. Wood, Jean, Donna and Phyllis all of Osgood. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Minnie L. Shepherd of Pico, California, and Mrs. Emma Smith and Jane Shank, whose addresses are unknown. A brother, J.M. Shank lives at Twin Falls, Idaho. His wife, one sister and two brothers have preceded him in death. Mr. Shank was a man who did not let hardships conquer him, but he conquered them in that true pioneer spirit. He possessed those sterling qualities that are lacking in many who are always seeking the easy road. Mr. Shank loved the little city of Nelson and its people and desired to make this his home so long as he lived in this world. Nelson should accept this as a real compliment from this fine citizen, who has now left us for his eternal abiding place. We believe this poem expresses his sentiments of the little town he loved. This town is good enough for me As long as it will hold a tree, Or lift a flower from its breast, Or spread a sunset in the west. As long as I can have the grass To take my footsteps as I pass. And feel the sun upon my head and linger by a tulip bed. And sense the touch of violet dusk And smell the evening's subtle musk, And watch the stars come out at night, And know that everything's all right. This town is good enough for me, It's truest riches all are free; And I don't care how long I stay, So long as I'm not in the way. Funeral services were held in the Klawitter Mortuary at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Clarence V. Powell, assisted by Mrs. Powell. Music was furnished by a quartet: Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Mary Murphy, Jas. F. Murphy and F.A. Scherzinger, with Mrs. H.A. Brubaker accompanist. Mrs. Hazel McDonald sang "Going Home." The pallbearers were: J.E. Portwood, Arlie Tomlinson, Harve Williams, Purle Vincent, G.E. Short and Chet Norwood. The body was laid to rest in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
