Hartland Man is Drowning Victim in Sibley Pond Pittsfield, July 19 – Frederick J Landers, 27, of Hartland was drowned early this morning when he fell from a boat which he was rowing across Sibley Pond here. His wife, standing on the shore, was a witness to the tragedy. Sheriffs Martin J. Gallant and Ralph Cianchette of Pittsfield said the man was the victim of a fainting spell. He was on his way across the lake to join Carl Saulsbury with whom he had planned to ride to Lewiston, where he was employed. Lander's wife, the former Doris Bouley of Pittsfield, called for aid, but the man sank before help could reach him. A neighbor marked the spot where Landers disappeared by anchoring the drowned man's boat there. Sheriff Cianchette and a grappling crew worked for over an hour before recovering the body in 30 feet of water. Landers was born May 9, 1921, the son of Frank and Phyllis (Boyd) Landers. He served in the Pacific area during the recent war. He is survived by his wife, and his mother Mrs. Phyllis Chase of Cornville; four half-brothers and a half-sister. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Military services will be held at the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Home in Hartland, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, the Rev. Charles Johonnett, officiating. Interment will be in the Nevens Cemetery, Hartland. (Bangor Daily News, Tuesday 20 July 1948, p1)
