He moved to Nebraska in 1882 living in Omaha with his wife and daughter and a partner in the firm of Kenney, Simmons, and Burrell (believe this was an architectural and engineering firm). The family moved to Fremont in 1885 where he was first a civil engineer for the Chicago Northwestern Railway, later becoming the Superintendent of Bridges and Buildings and the County Surveyor for Dodge County.
