Garten, 58, the Abilene, KS Chief of Police for 22 years and a lifelong resident of the town, died Friday afternoon, October 10, 1986 at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, following an extended illness. Fred was widely and well known, and sincerely loved by a wide circle of friends, family, as well as fellow law enforcement officials around the state of Kansas, which was shown by the unusually large attendance at his funeral held at the Abilene United Methodist Church. He was born April 17, 1928 in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Ward and Florence Heinen Garten. Fred attended the Abilene public schools and graduated from Abilene High School in 1946. He and Roberta Boyer were married March 25, 1951 in Solomon, Kansas. Fred worked for the City of Abilene 32 years, since Jan. 1, 1954, first serving with the fire department and then the police department. He was named Chief of Police in June 1964. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Abilene, the Benevolent Lodge #98 AF&AM Masonic Lodge, the Kansas Peace Officers Association and the International Association of Police Chiefs. He was an excellent police officer having a firm understanding of the law and performed his duties with firmness, but at the same time with fairness and understanding. Fred was a kind and friendly man, a loving husband, father, son, brother and grandfather who enjoyed his family very much and was especially fond of his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Roberta of the home; two sons, Robert of Abilene, and Gary of Overland Park; his father, Ward, of Abilene; a brother, Alvin "Buzz", of Abilene; four sisters, Phyllis Peterson of Brookings, South Dakota, Dorothy Bowell of Abilene, Edith Jackson of Salina, and Joan "Annie" Voy of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence, on Aug. 19, 1947 and his stepmother, Inez, on Jan. 12, 1985. Services will be 1:30 pm Monday, Oct. 18 at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery. Card of thanks from the family of Fred Garten: Words alone are not adequate to express our appreciation to everyone who remembered us in so many ways during Fred's illness and at the time of his death. We appreciated so much the love and concern shown by those that he worked with, the many flowers and memorial gifts that were given in his memory and for the attendance at the service by so many of his fellow law enforcement officers from Kansas and other states. We want to thank those who brought food into our home, the ladies of the Methodist church, those from Frontier Estates for preparing the meal the day of the service and to Mrs. Hagstrand for the beautiful organ music during the funeral service. We especially want to thank Dr. Snyder for his ministry and to Rev. Ron Bowell for ministering to us in such a special way.
