Description	:	Fred was the middle child of six and the first son of Nazaire (Ira) LaChance and Marie-Zoe Emma Barnier, both French Canadians from Quebec. He was baptised at the Church of Notre Dame in Chippewa Falls, WI, where his parents had been married in 1883. French was his first language. He was 3 years old when his family moved to the new state of South Dakota in 1891, where land prices were about $2.50 an acre. They lived in Andover, Day County until about 1903 when they moved to Spink, South Dakota and bought a larger farm. Fred was 24 years old... They lived in Andover, Day County until about 1903 when they moved to Spink, South Dakota and bought a larger farm. Fred was 24 years old when he married Ella Louise Rahm on 28 May, 1913. She was 17. Her parents were also immigrants but from Bavaria, and they had moved to SD from Iowa in 1908. Their first daughter Alice died as an infant in 1914. Six more children were born: Neva in 1915, Evelyn (Mac)in 1917, Lillian in 1919, Dennis in 1921, Thomas in 1927 and Bonnie in 1929. Fred and Ella farmed through the hard years of the 1930s when there was no crop due to drought and dust. In 1931 Fred worked at the Huron stockyards with other Spink County farmers. Finally in 1941, things were looking up. Fred and Ella decided to take a trip to Wisconsin where Fred's family had settled when they first emigrated from Quebec. Their oldest daughter Neva had a reliable car for teaching and they could use it after school let out while Neva ran things at home in their absence. They wanted to visit the Barniers--Fred's maternal relatives--and the Luckey family, one of the LaChance uncles who anglicized his name. Fred always said about this trip "I went to Wisconsin and came home 2 years older." His birthday occurred on the trip and they looked up his baptismal certificate which showed him to be a year older than he thought. Fred died 24 Sept 1944 at Turton, SD. Ella lived to be 89 years old and died in 1985.
