Description	:	Married in 1860 Frederick "Fred" Oswandel began working the Canal boats near Lockport. Fred was first married to Louisa Ream probably of Lockport, Pa. They had two children. Louisa and the children died of Asiatic cholera in 1855. In 1855, Fred moved from Pennsylvania to Scott, Mahaska Co. Iowa, where he married Catherine Butler. They had eight children. Fred registered for the Civil war draft July 1, 1863, but no record of actual service has been found. Fred had a farm of 148 acres in 1875 Fred had his left arm cut off while operating... The sickle bar cut off the arm above the elbow. He recovered and the next year returned to Philadelphia for the centennial with his parents. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
