He has stacked his arms for the last time in answer to that great roll call for which all men must respond. He was born in Centre county, Pennsylvania, May 4, 1832, and died at his home in Skidmore, Mo., May 10, 1912, aged 80 years and 6 days old. He came to Illinois in 1855 and in 1856 was married to Miss Rebecca Daughenbaugh of Freeport, Illinois. To this union was born four children, two girls and two boys. Mrs. Minerva Oaker(Oakes), Tobias, Neb., and Mrs. Sarah Fullerton, Daykin, Neb., Charles Rachau, Skidmore and a son who died at the youthful age of three years. He leaves besides his children, two brothers, one sister, twelve grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, besides numerous friends and distant relatives. He enlisted in 1861 as a soldier in the Civil War, with the 12th Regiment of Iowa Volunteers, and served 4 years, 3 months and 4 days, and has been totally blind since the close of the war. His funeral services were held at his residence Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. R. Barrett, assisted by Rev. W. H. Welton, both old soldiers. The pall bearers were also comrades in the great struggle of 61-64. The interment took place in the Masonic cemetery of Skidmore. One by one the old soldiers are dropping off. Every year witnesses a great army of them answering to the roll call beyond. A few more years and only a sweet memory is all that will be left of them to tell the story."
